General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. has been contracted by the U.S. Navy to develop conceptual designs for a Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA). The CCA is intended to support future carrier-based air wing operations. GA-ASI was contracted to design the CCAs using a modular approach to platform selection, allowing each aircraft to be rapidly reconfigured and upgraded for evolving mission requirements. 📢 David R. At what point during civil certification projects is a flying prototype needed? Are flying aircraft actually "needed" in order to establish requirements for certification? Several firms' press releases claim exactly that as they tout their prototype's being approved to fly (i.e., experimental airworthiness certificate). Some clarity here appears necessary. One of my favorite of the 7 Habits is "begin with the end in mind". So I've prepared this graphic to show -- in reverse order (top-down) -- some of the major steps leading to fielding a new aircraft that's used in airline-style operations. Notice that an experimental CofA (permission to fly prototype) is at the far lower left in this diagram (i.e., very, very early in the process). While it is possible that data from a prototype could be used in establishing means of compliance, that does not come from a few success-oriented demonstrations. Instead, they come from organized test programs (with FAA participation) which comprehensively cover off-nominal concerns in addition to nominal performance. A good example of reports from this type of research can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gXBh5xkk Even if a flying prototype is involved with a research project, the result would need to inform means of compliance issue paper(s). Issue papers can take years to conclude. Adding the flying research time only adds to the elapsed time prior to having an accepted certification plan. Afterward, another couple years may be required to conduct the certification project. Conclusion? Having a flying prototype doesn't facilitate the certain end of a certification project until the applicant and the FAA have agreed on what needs to be accomplished WITH that prototype. For that, an accepted certification plan is necessary. Monitoring news for cert plan acceptance by the FAA is far more relevant to tracking schedule progress than is a prototype's first flight. As a flight tester, this pains me to admit. But it's true.

This material represents one of three independent Study 5 outputs (Airbus Helicopters – Leonardo Helicopters – Sikorsky). It does not reflect a preferred design or national selection. 🇺🇸🚀 RTX’s Raytheon has announced the Next-Generation Short-Range Interceptor (NGSRI), a missile positioned as the successor to the Stinger system. The NGSRI will feature a rocket motor developed with Northrop Grumman, packing fuel more densely to boost performance without increasing the motor’s size. “The rocket motor itself is a really, really fixed volume, so it is a challenge to get more range out of it, but we are getting a significant amount,” said Raytheon’s NGSRI Tech Director William Strauss.

🚀 For NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Communications Services Project (CSP), a first was achieved during the NG-2 flight: launch vehicle telemetry relayed… via satellite. During Blue Origin’s recent New Glenn mission (NG-2), Safran - Space was pleased to support Viasat in conducting a joint CSP demonstration with NASA — successfully testing satellite-relayed launch vehicle telemetry. This demonstration was entirely independent from New Glenn’s mission operations. 🛰️ A first in-flight demonstration for Safran - Space’s Launch Vehicle Telemetry Transmission System (LVTTS) — combining our commercial-off-the shelf CMA stacks and Hyperlink transmitter —was used to send telemetry data toward the satellite link during the dedicated demonstration windows. On the ground, Viasat’s operational teams managed and operated the full reception of data, leveraging Safran - Space modems to help receive and process the demonstration data. This in-flight test represents a promising step for NASA’s CSP initiative, which aims to validate new commercial communication services for future missions. 👏 Congratulations to all teams involved in the CSP demonstration effort, and thank you to our partners for their trust and collaboration. 📷: Blue Origin
