10 Key Takeaways for Communicators from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Region 1 Conference “Innovate. Inspire. Impact.” was more than a theme—it was a call to action. Black journalists, media leaders, and storytellers gathered at Howard University to discuss the future of journalism and the evolving role of professional communicators. Here are 10 insights I walked away with that every communicator should keep in mind: 1. Community is power. NABJ was founded to create space for Black journalists to support each other and challenge bias in the newsroom. That mission remains vital. 2. Bias exists—acknowledge it. Whether reporting or creating content, own your perspective, check it, and let facts lead. 3. Truth over comfort. We must report and communicate honestly—even when the subject is close to our community. Accountability builds credibility. 4. Podcasting is more than audio. Story structure, emotional texture, and smart platform strategy (YouTube, Spotify polls, social snippets) turn listeners into loyal audiences. 5. Ask “who is this for?” Always center the communities you’re trying to reach—both in editorial decisions and storytelling choices. 6. Use AI as a collaborator, not a creator. It can support writing, research, editing, and ideation—but human judgment is non-negotiable. 7. Train your prompts like you train your team. Prompt engineering is the new literacy. Clear input = better output. 8. Transparency builds trust. If AI is part of your content process, disclose how it was used—especially in journalism. 9. Prepare like a pro. For high-stakes interviews or campaigns, do deep research, anticipate tough questions, and lean into silence when needed. 10. Keep your eyes on the open window. A favorite quote from the weekend: “Often we miss the open window because we’re still focused on the closed door.” Look for opportunity, even in setbacks. Chief Minister and Wyclef Jean Discuss Youth Empowerment Through Arts and Technology Dr. David Sengeh, Sierra Leone's Chief Minister, had a compelling conversation with Haitian rapper, singer, and record producer Wyclef Jean at a recent Global Citizens Now event in New York City. Their discussion focused on the critical roles of art and technology in empowering young people. The meeting sought to determine how Sierra Leonean musicians could benefit from Wyclef's extensive experience and technological insights, thereby fostering opportunities for growth and innovation in the music industry. #SierraLeone

USF TOWER LAUNCHED | The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, on Wednesday launched the first network tower under the Universal Service Fund (USF) in Epinga, Omundaungilo Constituency, Ohangwena Region. In her keynote address, Theofelus said the Government recognises that in today’s world, digital connectivity is not a luxury but a necessity and an essential driver of social and economic development. “The USF Epinga Tower will help ensure that no Namibian is left behind and that rural and underserved communities are fully included in our digital progress,” said the ICT Minister. USF is a Government flagship initiative aimed to expand connectivity in remote areas, prioritising underserved and unserved communities. The Epinga tower was among the selected sites which had no telecommunication coverage. The site now provides for 4G broadband data and voice services to the community members, critical public institutions including Shimbode Primary School and Epinga Clinic.

I’m proud to share that applications are open for the Reconstruct Thriving Youth Challenge — a $1 million initiative launched by our Belmont Innovation Labs to find, fund and scale solutions for young people as they transition from foster care to adulthood.  The complex challenges these men and women face can derail their greatest intentions and ambitions, leading to 70-80% of them experiencing homelessness, addiction, incarceration or trafficking within just three years.
