Enrollment Insights from The Signal Solution: What We Misread About the Campus Visit and What AI Now Reveals For years, the campus visit has been treated as one of the most reliable indicators of enrollment intent. In Section II of The Signal Solution, we highlight one of the most surprising insights surfaced through our work in enrollment AI. When analyzing more than 1,000 individual behavioral signals for each applicant, the campus visit ranked far lower than expected, landing at number 170 in predictive power. How could that be? This insight challenged us and challenged decades of conventional wisdom. At one partner institution, visited students enrolled at 8.5x the rate of non-visitors, yet 70 percent of visitors ultimately enrolled elsewhere. In other words, the campus visit, long treated as a strong intent indicator, performed worse than a coin flip at telling us which individual students would enroll. So how do we reconcile this? We all know the campus visit matters, perhaps more now than ever. The deeper pattern-recognition power of AI reveals the answer. A visit is not a standalone event. It is a moment inside a broader behavioral pattern. Where it sits in that pattern, what communications, timings and actions preceded it, and how the student engaged afterward tells us what the visit actually meant. A visit is not a single signal. In reality, it is reflecting one of four very different student motivations: Confirmation, where the student already knows you are their choice. Elimination, where the student is crossing you off. Compliance, where the student visits because someone told them to. Comparison, where the student is in late-stage evaluation among multiple finalists. The visit is still critical for emotional connection and conversion - arguably more than ever. But its strategic value to enrollment and marketing teams depends on understanding which of these motivations is present and then adjusting outreach, messaging, and counselor effort accordingly. When institutions group all visitors into a single high-interest category, they lose the ability to personalize outreach, build value, and engage the students who are actually movable, especially those in the elimination, compliance, and comparison profiles. This is the missed opportunity of the campus visit. This shift from surface-level milestones to behavioral intelligence is the breakthrough that AI brings to enrollment. Institutions that understand this distinction can focus counselor time and marketing messaging on the students who are still persuadable rather than spending resources on the majority whose decisions were already made. The signals of enrollment have always been there telling us this - but up until now we haven't had the tools to see them. Now we do. Reflections from the Silicon Horizon Last Thursday, Berkeley SkyDeck and Synopsys Inc brought together founders, investors, operators, and researchers for “The Silicon Horizon: The Next Decade for the Chip Industry.” It was energizing to help emcee a conversation that stepped back from the next node or the next funding round and focused on where this industry is really heading. What stood out most wasn’t any single prediction, but the consistency of the message across very different vantage points. We’re entering a decade where progress is less about brute-force scaling and more about how intelligently we design, integrate, and deploy silicon—from architecture and memory to packaging and system-level thinking, especially for AI-driven workloads. For startups in particular, speed to tape-out is becoming existential, not optional. And just as important, no one advances alone. The strongest insights reinforced how tightly coupled this ecosystem has become—academia, EDA and cloud platforms, foundries, and capital all moving together, increasingly organized around specific problems and workloads rather than general-purpose chips. It feels like a moment where collaboration and alignment matter more than sheer scale.
