It’s too hard & expensive — & takes too long — to build the things California needs to succeed, for example, housing, transit, clean energy, child care centers, health clinics, new businesses. A key Senate committee passed two major bills I’m authoring to help: (1) Allowing housing density around major transit stops (SB 79) (2) Modernizing CEQA so it’s harder to abuse it to obstruct projects for non-environmental reasons (SB 607) California needs to show we can govern effectively & make people’s lives better & more affordable. We’re working hard to do this.

Safdie Rabines Designs $25M Bird Rock Elementary Renovation ARCHITECTURE: Modernization Project Replaces Portables with New Buildings By Ray Huard SAN DIEGO – Safdie Rabines Architects, based in Mission Hills, has designed a renovation and modernization of the 75-year-old Bird Rock Elementary School. The more than $25 million project includes demolishing 11 portable classrooms and two other buildings on the 4.3-acre site and replacing them with new classrooms and an administration/classroom building that will be the front door to the campus. With CW Driver as the general contractor, new construction will include the administration building, a one-story building with six classrooms and a two-story building with nine classrooms. Other improvements include new playground equipment, new electrical service and plumbing and sewer lines, and solar electric arrays. “The challenge, in particular, about this site is, it’s a very small school site. They wanted to increase the number of classrooms, but they really do not want to reduce the outdoor space,” said Taal Safdie, co-founder of Safdie Rabines Architects. “The other challenge is, it’s on a site that slopes upward toward the east, so there are three levels on the site,” Safdie said. “Something that’s particularly important for us on this project is the existing campus is surrounded by eight-foot fencing and the front of the school is one large, eight-foot fence and the buildings are set back from the street and all you see from the street is these fences.” With the new design, the school will have a single point of entry through the renovated administration building, removing the fencing out front, “to give the school a nice presence on the street – a friendly and inviting presence on the street,” Safdie said. The school was well maintained, Safdie said, but the layout of the campus, with so many portable classrooms, was inefficient. “It had just been added to without a big, overall concept,” Safdie said, adding that the portable classrooms also gave part of the school a temporary feel. https://lnkd.in/gnbgXVEm #architecture #design #renovation #schools

There Is No Shortage Of Recent Headlines About States Pushing Back on Federal AI Preemption – Let's Briefly Look At Why It Matters for Business California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta joined 23 attorneys general in a letter to the FCC opposing efforts to preempt state AI laws. The letter argues the FCC lacks authority to override state regulation and warns that removing states from AI oversight would harm consumers. Attorney General Bonta said, "states can nurture innovation and protect residents at the same time and pledged to fight any federal overreach." As companies build and use AI products, they must prepare for a legal landscape where federal and state authorities vie for control. While the FCC may not have authority today (courts will determine this), Congress and to some extent the POTUS can definitely impact the conversation. This development signals that state legislatures and the federal government will continue to wade in to the AI and business use policies and highlights the importance of strategic compliance and advocacy.
