Identity verification via CLEAR

Last updated: 4 days ago

An identity verification on your profile means that you had a valid government-issued ID and it’s verified by LinkedIn’s verification partner. Please note that:

  • Availability: The feature is available in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico for those with a valid government-issued ID from one of those countries and a U.S., Canadian, or Mexican personal phone number. Business phone numbers are not accepted.
  • 3rd-party partners: LinkedIn uses a third-party partner, CLEAR, to verify your identity in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. LinkedIn is continuing to expand the list of partners and supported countries for identity verification.
  • Account creation:
    • A free CLEAR account will be created for you during the process if you don’t have one already. This is separate from the paid CLEAR Plus membership for airport security access.
    • If you already have a CLEAR account, you can continue the verification using your existing CLEAR account.
  • Adding a verification is optional. You’re encouraged but not required to add verifications to your profile.
  • Devices: You can access this feature through the LinkedIn mobile app (iOS and Android). The verification is not yet available on web browsers.
  • Name matching: The name on your government-issued ID must match the name you display on your LinkedIn profile. Your verification will not be added to your Linkedin profile unless they match.
    • If the name on your government ID does not match the name on your LinkedIn profile, you may still be able to obtain an identity verification. Learn more.
    • If you have a LinkedIn profile in another language, the name on your ID also needs to match the name on your secondary profile. If you are in the U.S. and the name you display on LinkedIn does not match the name on your ID, we will attempt to verify your information with a third-party trusted partner to identify any alternate names or aliases you may have used outside of LinkedIn. If a match is found, your identity verification request will be granted.
  • Data privacy: In cases of a successful verification, the date of birth, address, and phone number you supplied during the identity verification process will be deleted after 24 hours. If verification is unsuccessful, we will retain your shared personal information for 30 days for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Verifications are visible, but you can remove them anytime. Once verified, a verification may be visible on your profile, but the actual information itself from your ID card will not be visible. LinkedIn may display the issuing country of your ID on your profile. You can remove the verification in settings.

How to verify your identity with CLEAR:

  1. Click Resources or the  Resources icon on your LinkedIn profile, then About this profile, and then click Verify now to start the verification process.

  2. You’ll be redirected to a verification process through CLEAR. Enter your personal phone number or email, and follow the instructions.

    • If you don’t have an existing CLEAR account, one will be created for you after entering your email.
  3. You will be asked to take a photo of yourself.

  4. You may then be asked to take a photo of your government-issued ID, such as your driver’s license, state ID or passport.

  5. Click Yes, Share to share the verification with LinkedIn.

    • IMPORTANT: You must complete this step for the verification to be added to your LinkedIn profile.
  6. If the name on your government-issued ID matches the name on your LinkedIn profile, your identity verification will then be visible on your profile. Your actual ID information itself will not be visible. LinkedIn may display the issuing country of your ID on your profile. Note: If the name on your government ID does not match the name on your LinkedIn profile, you may still be able to obtain an identity verification. Learn more.
