🎧 Listened to an episode of the L&D SHAKERS on my daily steps yesterday and the speaker raised a powerful point about “learning on the job”, also known as experiential learning. Ask a tenured team member how much they’re actively learning now, and chances are, they’ll say “not much.” Why? Because we often assume learning must look like a formal training session, a structured course, or a workshop. But learning is so much more than that. It’s: - Picking up tips from a colleague’s excellent call 💡 - Noticing patterns in feedback from a performance review 🔁 - Testing a new approach to managing your time or leading a meeting ⏱️ - Observing how your manager handles a tough conversation and reflecting on it 🧠 - Asking a curious question that sparks a new idea or process in the team❓ It wouldn't be very L&D of me to leave this post without a 'key takeaway' would it? 👉 Sometimes, our most meaningful learning happens in the quiet moments we barely notice. #learninganddevelopment #growthmindset #experientiallearning

This realisation fuels my passion for creating spaces where individuals can embrace the unknown and uncover the skills they need for their journey. The challenge is not just recognising these moments but also deciding how to approach them. Growth happens when we embrace the process of discovery, moving beyond our comfort zones. From my observations, here are some simple truths to consider: • Familiarity builds confidence: Things become simpler the more we engage with them. • Challenges often mask opportunities: What seems difficult now may transform into strength with time and effort. • The choices we make define our journey: Deciding to focus on what truly matters is a skill in itself. So, how do we navigate this? Here are a few pointers: 1. Start with clarity: Identify what’s worth your time and energy. 2. Embrace a learning mindset: Everything is a skill—acknowledge what you don’t know and commit to learning. 3. This is my 8th post for my 20 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌, 20 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌 series that I'll be doing over 30 days! Gone are the days of once-a-year training. Learning happens every single day now. I remember sitting through mandatory annual workshops. We'd cram information for 8 hours straight, then forget most of it by next week. That model is dead. Here's how learning actually works today: → 5-minute videos during coffee breaks → Slack channels where experts share insights → Podcasts on the morning commute → Quick how-to articles between meetings → Peer coaching over lunch The shift is massive. We don't wait for permission anymore. We don't wait for budget approval. We don't wait for next quarter's training calendar. Knowledge hubs replaced training rooms. Micro-learning replaced day-long seminars. Peer sharing replaced top-down instruction. Learning became a flow, not an event. The power is completely in our hands now. We choose what matters to our growth. We choose when it fits our schedule. We choose who we learn from. This continuous approach builds real skills, not checkbox compliance. Not forgetting everything after the test. Real capability that compounds daily. The best professionals I know learn something new every single day. Even if it's just one small thing. That's how you stay relevant. That's how you grow faster than your competition. That's how you future-proof your career. Why Thought-Provoking Activities Are Essential in Training Training isn’t just about delivering content it’s about creating moments that make people think, reflect, and connect the dots themselves. That’s why I always include thought-provoking activities in my sessions. They do more than break the monotony: They challenge participants to question assumptions. They help people reflect on their own mindset and behavior. They create space for discussion, debate, and personal insight. Recently, after one such session, I received this feedback: “The activities made me stop and really think about my approach not just at work, but in life. I realized things I had been overlooking for years!” “I never expected a simple exercise to have such a lasting impact. Over the past few weeks since opening up personal and team coaching, I’ve had some incredible conversations with developers and leaders. Here are some things I've learned: 💬 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿. AI is accelerating the pace of work, but not replacing what makes people effective: empathy, clarity, and communication. 🧩 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱. The hardest problems are rarely about syntax. They’re about aligning people, decisions, and trade-offs, requiring good communication and management skills, plus the ability to identify your own value and boundaries. 🧭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗔𝗜, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆. Understanding the 𝘸𝘩𝘺 gets you to the best outcome fastest, no matter the topic. From why you're building a feature to why a dev on your team is struggling. Devs and teams out there need help, and it’s been energizing to help in any way I can. Every coaching session has surprised me on what the real underlying needs were. Often the real needs aren't quite was originally requested, and have rarely been purely technical. The real needs are always, in part, human. Action Learning in Action What does it look like? How does it work? What are we talking about?! Action Learning is a process for generating change by creating a space where new thoughts and emotions can emerge. These insights don’t arise in isolation — they happen between people: between us and our clients, within groups, and across teams and systems. Action Learning provides a structured framework for this to happen. At first, participants are often sceptical — the process can feel unfamiliar. Our first task as facilitators is to encourage people to try it out, exploring both abstract and concrete challenges such as: How do I maintain a collaborative stance when I’m feeling defensive?  Do I have the skills needed for this merger?  How can I play a useful role in this system? Through questioning and listening, something begins to shift.  Insights emerge — and actions are committed to within the group: “What’s obvious from the discussion is I need to have more confidence in my ability and knowledge.  I am going to stop undermining myself and focus my energy on the desired outcome and be in service to the partnership/collaboration.   I will do this by engaging in xyz "  “Who has agency and am I talking to the right people – what would buy in look like?  I need to acknowledge the impact of change and find a way to flex.  I will make time to meet and follow up with connections, seeking to find a thread through the labyrinth.     “ I need to reflect on my role in this and my drivers – undertake a critical assessment.  I will hand over some tasks to others and not carry it all.”  In this process, everyone learns.   Participants practise questioning, deep listening, and appreciative enquiry. When people are fully present, a flow emerges that is transformative.  Our role as facilitators is to hold the frame and the boundary — to create psychological safety so that capable people can bring both curiosity and vulnerability. In this space, collective creativity is enabled, a sense of an emerging future can be felt, and a renewed commitment to purposeful action follows. Learning 20251008-04 After receiving #negative_feedback, here are the steps I should take immediately: Give Myself Space: Take a moment before responding. This helps prevent a defensive reaction. I can say, "I'd like a few minutes to think about that, and then let's talk about it." Take Stock of My Feelings: Use the time to understand my emotions. Am I feeling defensive or misunderstood? Take a few deep breaths to center myself. Thank the Feedback Giver: Acknowledge the feedback and thank the person for sharing it with me. This shows appreciation for their honesty and trust. These steps help me manage my initial reaction and prepare for a constructive conversation.

My goal when I post is 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲. Today, hit pause and ask yourself: Are your 𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 truly updated, or just the old ones with minor tweaks? Most evaluations are polite - “smiley face” style. Sometimes you get useful feedback, but often it’s not enough. I’m advocating for 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: 1️⃣ Change your evaluation. Ask honest, straightforward questions that get real, unfiltered feedback - 𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗽𝘂𝗳𝗳𝘀! 2️⃣ Include questions in 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀:  • 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹: PPT decks, downloads, job aids, etc.  • 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: the content itself  • 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿: energy, engagement, delivery  • 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: they are 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲! 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽 Be honest! It’s the only way we get better. Low scores are completely OK! (Scale of 1–5) 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:  1. Did the slides keep your attention? Were they visually interesting?  2. Did you feel overwhelmed with information, models, stories, or theory?  3. Did the facilitator have energy and keep you engaged?  4. Did I actively participate in conversations and chat? This world is moving fast, and participants and organizations deserve 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆.
