There is a pretty incredible layer of irony to this one. If you are going to report on the potential shutdown of the highest academic office in the country, you should probably make sure your grammar passes a grade school test first. I get that live news is a relentless race to be first to air, and the pressure to get headlines on screen in real time is intense. But when a headline slips through reading "TO CLOSED," it makes you stop and wonder who is steering the ship. We rely on news organizations to be the ultimate arbiters of clear, accurate information, so when basic grammar gets sacrificed for speed, it quietly chips away at that public trust. Getting the scoop is great, but getting the syntax right is even better. #SpellcheckCannotSaveYou #MediaCredibility #ProofreadingMatters #Journalism #NewsFail #AccuracyFirst #KREM2

Pronoun/Antecedent Problems The word, phrase or clause that a pronoun replaces is called an antecedent. Pronouns and their antecedents need to be clear and match in gender and number. For example: The grandpa gave his grandson a new toy, and he was happy. In this example, “he” could refer to both the grandson and the grandpa, so it is unclear and incorrect.

It turns out St. Patrick didn't just banish the serpents, he might have banished a few letters from this graphic, too. If you are going to drop some historical trivia on us, you should probably check the "recors" to make sure the country name actually gets a capital letter. I know morning news graphics are built at a breakneck pace, and rushing to get trivia segments ready for the early broadcast means text is often typed out in a blur. But when a full-screen graphic goes live with "recors" staring right back at the audience, it steals the focus from the actual 'fact.' We look to news stations as the definitive, trusted source for clear information, so when basic editing falls by the wayside in the rush to air, it takes a little bit of the authority away from the broadcast. Speed is important for keeping things moving, but an extra two seconds of proofreading prevents a total slip-up. #SpellcheckCannotSaveYou #MediaCredibility #ProofreadingMatters #NewsFail #Typography #KREM2 #AccuracyFirst

From the Veteran Proofreader FAQ page: “Some other proofreaders take three days to get docs back to me. How can you get it done in two?” – Court Reporter This is my full-time job, not some side hustle. I don’t have a lot of the distractions that some of those other proofreaders have such as a family to attend to, school, or a day job to go to. In my world, there are no PTA meetings or golf outings with my buddies. My partner works 50 or more hours every week so, sadly for me, she is not demanding of my attention. I have a proper office setup where I can be found from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. almost every day. I have a system in place to automatically send out invoices on the first of each month. Marketing and things like that are mostly on autopilot or handled by someone else. Having systems in place leads to efficiency and allows me, as a freelancer, to have the time needed to pay extra attention as I proofread your files. Streamlining my work allows me the extra time needed to develop a relationship with each court reporter I work with so I can understand and adhere to their particular needs and preferences. Brown sugar. Or as this card suggests, perhaps brown suguar. Close enough… unless you plan to feed it to your pet jagur or cougur. In everyday life, typos like this are harmless. You still understand the recipe. You still know what belongs in the bowl. Nobody’s dessert is ruined because of a few swapped letters. But in a legal transcript, those same letter swaps matter. Court reporters capture testimony exactly as spoken, often at speeds exceeding 200 words per minute. The transcript becomes the official record, relied upon by attorneys, judges, and appellate courts. Spellcheck may flag obvious misspellings, but it cannot always detect context, intent, or subtle errors that slip through under pressure. That is why professional transcript proofreading matters. It ensures the final record reflects precision, protects the court reporter’s reputation, and preserves the integrity of the proceeding. Because accuracy is not optional when the record is permanent. 👉 Court reporters, what is one misspelling you see all the time that spellcheck fails to catch? 👉 Know a court reporter who would appreciate this? Tag them so they feel seen. #CourtReporter #Proofreader #SpellcheckCannotSaveYou #TranscriptProofreading #LegalTranscripts #AccuracyMatters #ProofreadingLife #AttentionToDetail #WordsMatter If only they had hired a proofreader. Even a single misplaced letter leaves a permanent mark.

If you are trying to get the audience to text in, it generally helps to give them a phone number that actually makes sense. My favorite thing about spring might be the weather, but my least favorite thing is trying to decipher what happened to this graphic. I get that morning shows are a whirlwind of moving parts, and rushing to get interactive viewer segments ready for air means graphics are often built on the fly. But when you have a massive typo in the main phone number, followed by a completely different variation of the error in the lower third crawl, it is a bit of a mess. News broadcasts are supposed to be the trusted, definitive source for accurate information, so when basic details like a contact number get garbled in the rush to air, it makes you wonder what else is slipping through. Speed is a priority, but accuracy is what keeps the audience connected. #SpellcheckCannotSaveYou #MediaCredibility #GraphicDesignFail #NewsFail #AccuracyFirst #ProofreadingMatters #KREM2
