The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) hosted the U.S. Naval Academy Physics Club ⚓ Midshipmen toured our cutting-edge facilities, including the Laboratory for Autonomous Systems Research (LASR), where they saw our Desert and Tropical High Bays in action. These unique environments allow our researchers to rigorously test and harden new technologies against real-world conditions, ensuring our naval systems are reliable and ready for deployment. They also saw NRL's advanced 3D printing capabilities, highlighting how rapid prototyping accelerates innovation and supports future naval readiness. This visit fostered incredible collaboration between students and researchers, and ensures NRL research supports U.S. Navy operations and the future of naval technology! #NRL #USNA #NavalResearch #Physics #Innovation #NavalReadiness #STEM #FutureForce #NavalSTEM #SciencewithImpact US Navy, United States Naval Academy, Naval STEM, United States Department of War, United States Marine Corps, Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global)

About us
Welcome to the U.S. Research Laboratory LinkedIn page. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) conducts a broad spectrum of cutting-edge scientific research with immediate and long-range applications for the Department of the Navy, the Defense Department and the nation. Founded July 2, 1923, NRL is a scientific and engineering command dedicated to research that drives innovative advances for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. NRL is the Department of the Navy‘s corporate laboratory and reports to the Chief of Naval Research. As the Navy's corporate laboratory, NRL is the principal in-house component in the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR) effort to meet its science and technology responsibilities. NRL has had a long and fruitful relationship with industry as a collaborator, contractor, and through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs). NRL values this linkage and continues to develop it. NRL is an important link in the Navy Research, Development, and Acquisition (RD&A) chain. Through NRL, the Navy has direct ties with sources of fundamental ideas in industry and the academic community throughout the world and provides an effective coupling point to the R&D chain for ONR. NRL is a Navy Working Capital Fund activity, which means it is not a line-item in the U.S. Federal Budget. Instead of direct funding from Congress, all costs, including overhead, are redeemed through sponsor-funded research projects. For more information, please visit the official NRL website at http://www.nrl.navy.mil/. If you have a media query, please contact the NRL public affairs at 202-480-3746 or nrlpao@us.navy.mil. #TechTuesday NRL's ISIS360 Enhancing sailor safety and operational readiness is paramount. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's ISIS360 system achieves both by transforming high-risk tank inspections into a safe, non-human entry process. Beyond initial inspection, the system's Corrosion Detection Algorithm provides quantifiable data, enabling a shift from reactive repairs to a predictive maintenance strategy. This data-driven approach allows for better long-term planning and ensures the structural integrity of the fleet. Fair winds and following seas to Cmdr. Luis A. Levine, who relinquished command of Scientific Development Squadron (VXS) 1, the Warlocks, on March 27, to Cmdr. Andrew R. Vawter. ⚓ Levine left the Warlocks with a few last words of mentorship and inspiration. 🗣️ “Two words: Servant Leadership, centered on trust and teamwork. Focus on your people, measure your success not by the wins and losses, but by the growth and accomplishments made by those under your charge because you helped them get there. That’s teamwork.” Read more about the Warlocks' legacy of leadership here: http://spgv.io/60468ybE #NRLresearch #research #science #technology #airborne #warlocks #USNavy #Innovation #DefenseTechnology #MissionDriven #revolutionize #navalpower #securethefuture US Navy, Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global), Office of Naval Research, United States Department of War

This year, we're celebrating ONR's 80th anniversary! For 80 years, the Office of Naval Research has propelled naval science and technology to impressive heights. In fact, some of the most important naval platforms and capabilities began as ONR-sponsored research -- and ONR continues to lead the way, providing dominant warfighting capabilities across the Fleet and Force. Throughout the year, we'll highlight those technologies, breakthroughs and platforms that have shaped Naval warfighting for eight decades. Follow along as we explore 80 years of innovation -- and how ONR will help power the future Fleet and Force. #ONR80 US Navy | United States Marine Corps | U.S. Naval Research Laboratory | Office of Naval Research Global (ONR Global)

A group of chemists saw an exciting result after they left some samples sitting out for a few days. They had encapsulated brightly colored dye molecules in a metal-organic framework to validate some spectroscopic work they were doing. What they noticed later led to a new, patentable use for those curious substances known as MOFs. The lead author, Christopher Breshike, Ph.D., is presenting the results of this fortuitous side project today at #ACSSpring2026 in Atlanta! Later this week, he’ll also present his group’s larger program of developing sorbents for hazardous chemicals at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

Whether walking, driving, sailing, or flying, GPS technology helps people know where they are and get where they’re going. A NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and U.S. Naval Research Laboratory instrument on board the recently launched GPS III SV-09 satellite will help improve location measurements. By precisely reflecting light from a ground station and back, the Laser Retroreflector Array instrument helps scientists learn the exact location of the GPS satellite. GPS III SV-09 isn’t the only satellite that uses this technology. Earth observing satellites like ICESat-2, SWOT, and GRACE-FO also rely on laser ranging technology.
