Students in Stacey Claiborne’s third and fourth-grade computer science class had a secret weapon at the 2025 ACTE Annual Region 7 Tech Fair in Mobile, Alabama, and the 2025 ACTE State Tech Fair in Montevallo, Alabama: they built their own mobile apps with Thunkable. In a field crowded with PowerPoints and static coding projects, Stacey’s students stood out — and took home big prizes — because they brought working apps to the competition. They weren’t just learning about technology. They were creating it. When the competition challenged students to create something innovative, Stacey’s class was ready. One student built an app designed to help kindergarteners learn their colors. Several others created apps to quiz their classmates on tornadoes and geography. I met the creator of the platform that sparked my passion for computer science—Arun Saigal, CEO of Thunkable. Safe to say, my time at the ASU+GSV Summit was nothing short of transformative. I was blessed to receive a scholarship alongside fellow HBCU students and my fellow Spelmanites Ariana Cobb and Devyn Washington to attend the ASU+GSV Summit and AI Show in sunny San Diego. Over three incredible days, I immersed myself in the world of EdTech and AI through a variety of sessions. My favorites were "Securing Funding for Your Startup," the WGU Labs Accelerator Pitch Competition, "5 Elements of Products People Are Obsessed With," and the hands-on Build-a-Bot Workshop. As a researcher in the Innovation Lab using AI, this conference provided vital insights to enhance my project and make it something people would want to invest in. I also gained a deeper understanding of how AI will drive innovation and transform college campuses in the future. A very big thanks goes to Tiffany Taylor for this opportunity and to the Spelman Innovation Lab—especially Jerry Volcy and Jaycee Holmes—for selecting me and being amazing advisors throughout this trip.
