  • When you have alignment in your organization... ✅ Your team is working hard collectively toward common goals ✅ You create focus and clarity around priorities ✅ You reach (and even surpass) your goals faster Sounds like a winning formula for all.

What would happen if you asked each of your leadership team members what their top three priorities are? I recently posed this question to a small group of business owners who are thinking about selling in the next few years. The answers I heard might have initially seemed all over the map, and yet it became clear to me that almost all of them were missing the same thing... 👉 Alignment When I voiced this to the room, one business owner asked: "Why is alignment so important? Everyone on my team is doing what they're supposed to be doing." I could have answered - "if that was the case, then why are you here?" - BUT my goal is to help them get a bigger payout when they go to sell, not offer snarky retorts. So...let's talk Competing Priorities... ...one of the biggest causes of misalignment in companies. Consider a situation where: ️ Sales/Marketing is focused on new clients and revenue growth ▪️ Client service is focused on client satisfaction ▪️ Finance is focused on expense reduction and maximizing profit Sounds like everyone is focused on the right things, doesn't it? Not necessarily. In fact, there is a high chance you've created teams with... ❌ competing priorities. Here are two examples. 🤔 Example 1: High revenue doesn't necessarily equal higher profit. Potential buyers want to see that your company's revenue is increasing, but they also want to make money (aka profit). Creating alignment ensures that: ✅ Your sales team is focused on selling higher-margin services (i.e. services that make you more money than they cost to provide) ✅ Your client service team understands the parameters in which they should be working and identifies potential issues with clients and/or potential clients that could reduce profit 🤔 Example 2: Minimizing expenses can hamper growth. Buyers want to see that you're spending money judiciously, BUT they also want the business to run on its own. Creating alignment around a common budget ensures that money is wisely spent. ✅ Giving a raise to a key employee ensures they feel valued and will remain committed to company goals ✅ Investing in technology to increase efficiency also increases value long-term ❌ Hiring low-cost, less-qualified resources saves money, but could jeopardize client retention and long-term revenue These are just two of the many reasons we focus on building Alignment as the first part of our Scale for Sale framework. Working together, we help you identify clear, cohesive goals and a future-focused plan with accountability. With a common foundation, your team will work better together and achieve goals faster. 🤝 Connect with me (and please send me a note) 🚶♀️ Follow me (learn more about growing your business & communication skills) 💭 Share your thoughts (comment or DM me) 🔔 Ring my bell (stay up-to-date on my latest content)

  • Business owners thinking about selling need to start early and gather a team of trusted resources around them. While this may not be surprising, the overall M&A landscape is changing. Check out Jennifer Cresswell's top three takeaways from Flaster Greenberg PC's 6th Annual M&A Conference. Agree? Disagree?

Do you want to sell your business in the next few years? If so...you need to start preparing today. Not freezing temperatures nor icy roads could keep me away from Flaster Greenberg PC's 6th Annual Mergers & Acquisitions Conference last week. The slate of interesting, experienced panels and expert moderators provided their insights into what's in store for business owners and investors for 2026. Here are my three top take-aways: 1️⃣ Deals are taking longer, and Due Diligence is going deeper than ever before. 👉 Make sure your company is set up financially (revenue AND profit) and operationally (people AND process) before courting buyers 👉 Engage specialized consultants you trust and rely on them for their expertise 2️⃣ Attractive Industries (i.e. high interest and activity from buyers) 👉 Professional Services (especially interesting to PE Firms) 👉 Anything related to AI Infrastructure (think data centers) 👉 Cyber Defense 👉 Family / Generational Businesses 3️⃣ Culture, values, and communication styles should be considered during the deal-making process. 👉 They can make or break a successful integration after the sale. Great to see so many people in person. Robert Waring, Heather Johnston, CEPA®, Kevin DiMedio Special thanks to Stacey Linderman for inviting me to attend. I'll definitely join you again next year! 🤝 Connect with me (and please send me a note) 🚶♀️ Follow me (learn more about growing your business & communication skills) 💭 Share your thoughts (comment or DM me) 🔔 Ring my bell (stay up-to-date on my latest content)

  • We're often asked how a Fractional Chief of Staff helps business owners scale for sale. Here are our top three ways: 1️⃣ Strategic thinking partner for the owner who sees the big picture and all the little pieces needed to get there 2️⃣ Objective evaluator of people and process who incorporates insight from the owner and leadership team and an experienced outside perspective 3️⃣ Expert communicator who helps to bring everyone together (ALIGNMENT) while providing the hands-on oversight to put the right pieces in place (OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY) to accelerate growth Want to learn more about how a Fractional Chief of Staff can help your company? DM us or type "let's chat" in the comments for a free consultation.

What do you feel when you see a pile of 1,000 puzzle pieces? ⁉️ Chaos? Dread? Something you should avoid at all costs? If you said "yes," I'm not surprised. These are common answers I hear from a lot of the business owners I meet. Some only want to focus on the big picture and expect their people and processes to fall into place on their own. Possible? Yes. Likely? No. Others focus only on one area and leave the others to fend for themselves, while also thinking that everything will neatly fall into place. Possible? Yes. Likely? No. See the pattern? If you want to create a scalable company you can sell for a significant profit, you need a strategic partner you can rely on to help: ▫️ See the ideal big picture ▫️ See all the separate pieces and how they should fit together 👉 Enter the role of Chief of Staff, aka Puzzle Master. For people who play this role, myself included, we see that same pile of 1,000 puzzle pieces and feel... ✅ Excitement ✅ Possibility ✅ Something that, when put together, will be beautiful - AND worth more to everyone else now that the chaos is organized Immediately, the wheels start turning as I map out my strategy to solve the puzzle. 1️⃣ Edge pieces first 2️⃣ Areas that I'm drawn to based on color, design, or even sometimes finding a quick win (i.e. an early match) Just like puzzles, every company is different. And just like solving a puzzle, business owners need a strategy to create sustained growth and a sellable company. 1️⃣ Build alignment 2️⃣ Create operational efficiency 3️⃣ Accelerate growth That's the benefit of having an experienced Chief of Staff. 👉 They see the big picture AND how all the pieces should fit together to maximize value. • What makes the difference between a good leader and a great leader? In her latest leadership in less than a minute tip, Jennifer Cresswell, talks about how getting organized makes chaos feel manageable and actually can empower your team to do their best work. 👇 Check it out!

How do you deal with the chaos? A good leader is willing to pitch in and help their team. A great leader puts the right people in place and empowers them to do their best work by giving them the process, tools, and support they need. Your job as a leader is not doing (even though that happens occasionally). It's about LEADING your team, so the work gets done. In my latest leadership in less than a minute tip, I talk about the importance of embracing the chaos and then focusing on putting the right structure in place to reach new heights. • When you're starting a services business, you focus on your clients. Their wants. Their needs. "The client is always right" mentality (at least most of the time). As you start to build critical mass, it's easy to get stuck being reactive. ❌ Being an order taker vs. asking questions to make a recommendation. ❌ Letting their wants dictate your focus. Let's be clear. Client service IS important. Clients ARE PART of the life-blood of your company. BUT... It's also important - sometimes even more important - for you to be focused on the future. Why? Because if you're not, your company may not be there to serve your clients in the long run. Creating a strong foundation that supports your company's growth and allows you to flex to the needs of your clients, the changing macro-environment, and your employees' needs will ensure that you're around to help and serve your clients year-after-year. PS: It will also help you to get a much more lucrative offer for your company when the time comes to sell.

Growth without a backbone will always hit a ceiling. There comes a point in every services business where "we just make it work" stops working. ⁉️ Constant state of being reactive to clients...prospects...internal team ⁉️ Everyone following different or slightly different processes ⁉️ Custom everything for every client This was the situation my client, the owner of a PR firm, found herself in. She knew she wanted to keep growing (and hopefully sell one day), but the business was: ❌ Too dependent on her ❌ Too loosely organized to scale So...we got intentional. ✅ Developed a plan with clear roles and accountability to achieve goals ✅ Streamlined, standardized, and documented processes so new team members could be quickly onboarded and deliver consistently excellent work ✅ Mapped out every step of the client life cycle to ensure pricing models matched value provided The result was a company with a strong operational backbone that 👉 Tripled Staff 👉 Increased revenue 4x WITH stronger margins (i.e. more profit) 👉 Said YES! to bigger opportunities WITHOUT owner or team burnout Said another way... The kind of business worth a top-dollar offer from the ideal buyer. Don't get fooled by revenue that looks good on paper. If you're constantly scrambling to deliver your services, it's time to take action. 👉 Build the structure to support the growth you're working so hard to achieve, so you can get the lucrative offer you deserve when it's time to sell. 🤝 Connect with me (and please send me a note) 🚶♀️ Follow me (learn more about growing your business & communication skills) 💭 Share your thoughts (comment or DM me) 🔔 Ring my bell (stay up-to-date on my latest content)

  • A new year can bring new opportunities, but only if you're open to them. Many owners find themselves wanting things to be different and "saying" they're open to change, but when it really comes down to it... 🤔 They want to keep doing the same things, but get a different - more positive - result. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. Change is inevitable, and it starts with being open to new perspectives. It may not be easy, but it can be life-changing for you and your business. New perspectives lead to new opportunities New opportunities lead to new growth. Let's get growing!

A new perspective can be gained in many ways. For me, one of those ways is spending time with people I know well (and some I don't) in casual, often celebratory, settings. ⁉️ Like the holidays ⁉️ Sometimes what may seem like a simple, mundane detail about someone else's life sparks a novel idea or a solution to a problem I've been grappling with for a while. All of sudden, the dots connect, and I'm scrambling to write it down so I don't forget. The, I can come back to it later and start filling in the details. These sparks can come from anywhere, and often appear when you haven't been focused directly on the issue at hand (writer's block, anyone?). Believe it or not, that's your unconscious mind: ✅ Exercising creativity ✅ Solving problems ✅ Bringing your next brilliant idea to the forefront And we all should be thankful. It's a new year. 2026. The good news is that opportunity abounds, and possibilities are endless. The better news? 👉 You don't have to figure it all out by yourself. This is the perfect time to embrace your team as you set goals (if you haven't already) and create alignment throughout your company to MAKE IT HAPPEN. Who knows what good, even great, ideas will bubble up? New perspectives ✅ Create new opportunities ✅ Prepare you to overcome new challenges AND... ✅ Accelerate growth Who's ready? • There isn't always an easy answer in business or in life. That's why you need to evaluate your options and select what best helps you and your business. This year, we're focused on helping our business owners find the right solution for them... 👉 whether it's internal, us, another trusted partner, or a combination of resources. You and your business need to win. And that's what matters.

It seems like there is a guru for everything these days. Sometimes it's easy to discern who is "all talk" vs. who could really help you. But when... ❌ The clock is ticking ❌ Your to-do list is growing ❌ The line outside your office (physically or virtually) keeps growing You need an answer. You need a solution. And you need it now (or at least you want it now)! My latest leadership tip is intended to be a kind reminder to take a breath before you make a decision on who can best help you and your business. ⁉️ Remember - there is no silver bullet that solves all your business problems. 👉 Focus on finding that right solution, not just looking for the easy way out. It will save you money, time, and headache in the long run. 👇 Enjoy!

  • It's that time of year again. Chaos has descended. Everyone is busy, and yet nothing seems to be "really" getting done. Why? Because there is no focus. You and your employees are literally playing "whack-a-mole" and hoping for the best. It's the exact situation that we love here at Thoughtgro (and why our clients love us too). We create order out of chaos, leading you less stress and exponential growth. While we realize that right now you may just want to finish what absolutely needs to get done (and we do understand), remember that we're here when you return from a "long winter's nap," and the chaos is still hanging around.

Are you feeling overwhelmed? You're not alone. This is often a very chaotic and stressful time of year, especially for business owners. Spending time with family and friends while also giving your business and employees what they need can feel like being pulled in opposite directions. Before you know it, everything feels like a burden and joy has "left the building." Over the years, I've learned that I thrive in "the messy," while my brain craves organization. This might sound counterintuitive. However, it actually explains why I enjoy supporting business owners as they scale or prepare for sale. Let's face it: Business can be messy and chaotic, especially in service businesses where your people are your product. ❌ Busy-ness doesn't always equate to growth. But when you: ✅ Figure out what you need ✅ Put the right people in the right seats ✅ Give them the processes and accountability they need to do their best work Suddenly, chaos becomes organized...AND... 👉 Exponential growth follows. If this sounds simple, I warn you, it's typically not. I don't say this to scare you or dissuade you from going for it. Rather, I want to be realistic about the hard work, difficult decisions, and strong, supportive leadership that it takes to be successful. It's also necessary if you want to build a strong, resilient, and valuable company. Are you ready? It's time to take the first step. 👉 Embrace the messy...then, get organized. • Are you a small business owner looking to accelerate the growth of your company? Then, our Advisory Guidance program may be just what you need. It's specifically designed for business owners who want: 1️⃣ A strategic partner to help develop a clear roadmap with priorities 2️⃣ Frequent touch points to stay on track 3️⃣ Quarterly reviews to make adjustments as needed If you're ready to stop working in your business and let your business work for you. Let's chat.

With Thanksgiving in the review view and the holiday season in full swing, how are you feeling? A: Relief that your business made it through 2025 B: Fear about how you're going to survive 2026 C: A & B, at the same time, every day D: It's the holiday season, I'll think about 2026 in 2026 Many business owners I've talked to are ready to close the book on 2025. And rightfully so. It's been a year filled with uncertainty, and yet most remain hopeful - albeit with healthy skepticism - about the future. I've also found that the business owners who are the most hopeful have: 1️⃣ Specified a cadence to review their businesses regularly 2️⃣ Set goals 3️⃣ Focus staff and leadership efforts on actions that support those goals 4️⃣ Keep in mind that they may need to pivot if circumstances change (Full disclosure: Some of these business owners are working with me in our Advisory Guidance Program.) As the year comes to a close, it's the perfect time to set your business up for success in 2026. Or in other words - let's gro! (Pun intended.) Whether you want to work with me, engage another advisor, or do things on your own, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that you DO SOMETHING. Here are some high-level recommendations straight from my playbook to get you started. 1️⃣ Set a regular meeting cadence with specified times to review your business, including progress made against goals. 💡 PRO TIP: Personally, I like quarterly. Not too often that you're tinkering. Not too infrequently that you're late to make necessary changes. 2️⃣ Set a reasonable amount for goals for your team to accomplish and assign someone to be accountable for each goal - AND hold them accountable. 💡 PRO TIP: Personally, I limit the number to 2 or 3 big goals, depending on the size of the team. Why? If you try to do too much, you won't make meaningful progress on anything. 3️⃣ Stay focused, but be flexible to pivot if conditions change. 💡 PRO TIP: Deprioritize work that doesn't directly tie to meeting your goals. This doesn't mean you can't take advantage of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Instead, it keeps your team working together and prevents them from going in too many different directions.
