Building a more trusted and trustworthy press
About us
The Trust Project is an international consortium of news organizations collaborating to use transparency to build a more trustworthy and trusted press. Search engines and social media platforms, which have become important news distributors, are participating as well. Founded by award-winning journalist Sally Lehrman, we are a nonpartisan non-profit. We apply a user-centered design process. Based on dozens of in-depth interviews with a diverse spectrum of public voices, news executives involved in the Trust Project identified and designed a system of 8 Trust Indicators®, or disclosures about the news outlet, producer, and commitments behind a story, to make it easy for the public to choose integrity-based news. Digital platforms such as Google, Meta and Bing use the Trust Indicators to surface quality news to their users. The materials produced by our collaboration are available to all reputable news companies that apply to participate and agree to abide by the group’s commitments and Trust Protocol.

Freedom is a treasure we enjoy with the help of a free press. But in the past month, the FBI seized the equipment of a Washington Post reporter and arrested two independent reporters for covering a protest in Minnesota. We urge you to support your right to be informed. Tell your senators and representatives that such attacks on freedom of information are both wrong and intolerable. #PressFreedom #TheTrustProject #Trustworthynews

When reporters have the freedom to explore and express the debates shaping society, that society can be free as well. Sometimes reporters may have to lawfully follow people into spaces where others feel uncomfortable and ask uncomfortable questions. We urge you to recognize the clear danger to open debate and community rights when journalists like Don Lemon and Georgia Fort, are arrested and charged for covering a protest in a church. #PressFreedom #TheTrustProject #Trustworthynews

Whether you are left, right or in-between, ethical news media do their best to keep you and your community informed. They routinely take risks to listen, bear witness and keep governments accountable. Reporters Don Lemon and Georgia Fort face severe charges for simply covering a protest, nothing more. Reporters will continue to fight for your right to know what's going on in government and on the streets. The Trust Project condemns actions to try to make it a crime to tell Americans about what's going on in their country. cc: Anya Schiffrin, Claes de Vreese, Sally Lehrman
Two journalists were arrested for simply doing their job, which is serve all Americans through timely and accurate information. They were letting our communities know about the debate and demonstrations responding to immigration enforcement actions that affect all of us. We should all be alarmed about this escalation of attacks on our free press, a cornerstone of personal freedoms and democracy everywhere.
