I'm excited to share Pew's recommendations improving how states budget for natural disasters along with my colleagues Caitlyn Wan Smith and Colin Foard. As disasters continue to become more frequent, severe and expensive, it is more important that ever that states take steps to understand the fiscal risks that accompanies these events, proactively plan to manage those costs in the near-term, and effectively invest to slow the growth of those costs going forward. We’re committed to helping our neighbors meet their most basic needs, the foundation for economic mobility. That’s why we recently awarded nearly $4 million to nonprofits that help Philadelphians secure benefits like food assistance, health care, supplemental social security income, disability insurance, and more. • $3.5 million to Community Legal Services to fund free legal representation and education on obtaining benefits. • $280,000 to Homeless Advocacy Project to educate mental and behavioral health providers on necessary documentation, improve data collection, and more. • $200,000 to Widener University’s Health, Education, and Legal Assistance Project to support medical and legal assistance for pregnant and parenting families.
🦈 These sharks can walk across reefs—but they might not be around for much longer. In Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, “walking sharks” are declining, despite full legal protection. These rare sharks use their fins to move between tidepools and shallow reefs, hunting where other predators can’t. The only problem? Their coastal habitats are now threatened by fishing, tourism, development and climate change. 2025 #PewMarineFellow Dr. Edy Setyawan is on a mission to protect them. Using tools like drones, photo IDs, and tracking tags, he’s uncovering where these sharks live, how they move, and how many are left. America needs better electricity delivery. Fast. 70% of our power infrastructure is 25+ years old—outdated and inefficient. As a result, we have a 2,600-gigwatt backlog of energy projects just waiting for new capacity to come online.
