I want to extend a (belated) thank you to the The Alexander Hamilton Society at Yale and Ethan Schroyer for inviting me to speak on campus about my work in the humanitarian field. I also want to thank INSO colleagues Scott Bohlinger and Sara Shannag for sharing their invaluable insights about humanitarian access and security. I met quite a few fascinating students who expressed a genuine desire for public service, particularly in humanitarian work. I have no doubt Yale students will one day be leaders in this field, and I look forward to seeing what they accomplish along the way.

I had the pleasure of having a discussion yesterday with Jessica Faieta, former United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, and my professor over the past two semesters at Yale. During our discussion through The Alexander Hamilton Society at Yale, we spoke about her work monitoring the Venezuelan refugee crisis, her role in verifying the peace accords in Colombia, and her experiences across many countries through her various roles in the UN. We also discussed her perspectives on the future of Venezuela and Cuba, including the prospects for credible democratic elections in Venezuela and the possibility of political change in Cuba amid growing economic pressures. I want to sincerely thank Professor Faieta for taking the time to join us and share her insights with our community.

  • This past week, AHS had the pleasure of hosting Doug Beck for a conversation on innovation and national security. Beck's career spans from Silicon Valley to the Pentagon, including roles as Director of Defense Innovation Unit, Apple Vice President, Partner at McKinsey, Chief Strategy Officer at Charles Schwab, and U.S. Navy Reserve Captain. A Yale graduate and Rhodes Scholar, Beck brings a rare cross-sector perspective on the future of defense, technology, and U.S. global strategy. A huge thank you to Mr. Beck for speaking with us and everyone who attended the event!

  • Earlier this month, Yale AHS has the pleasure of hosting Tunisia Prime Minister Youssef Chahed for a conversation on the Arab Spring and his experience navigating the challenges that so often define governance in the region. Dr. Chahed served as the Prime Minister of Tunisia from 2016-2020. He was both the youngest head of government in the country’s history, as well the longest serving since Tunisia’s democratic transition. As Prime Minister, he made significant advancements in stabilizing the democracy by squashing terrorism, launching anti-corruption campaigns, and building coalitions. He is now a Senior Fellow with the Harvard Kennedy School’s Middle East Initiative.
