About us

The Symbiosis Coalition aims to facilitate an advance market commitment (AMC) of up to 20 million tons of nature-based carbon removal credits. While only a fraction of the world's total carbon removal goals, this is the first and largest AMC ever for nature-based carbon removal, equivalent in volume to the 2030 carbon removal goals of the state of California.

  • Pragmatism defined the conversation during Singapore’s #Ecosperity last week. From the Opening Dialogue at the GenZero Climate Summit hosted by Frederick Teo, to IFC - International Finance Corporation's Innovate 4 Climate conference panel hosted by Basak Odemis to private roundtable discussions, the theme that dominated the discussions was action. Our Executive Director Julia Strong shared what we’re seeing firsthand at Symbiosis Coalition, evidence that the market is maturing and increasingly moving from theory to practice: → Projects increasingly moving from early stage to offtake ready → Science informing updated standards that buyers can trust → Investors starting to deploy capital at scale, unlocked by buyers increasingly engaging in offtake agreements → Offtake structures borrowing lessons learned from renewables to give buyers confidence in quality and delivery → Countries setting policies that give the market the certainty it needs to act Singapore demonstrated that the market foundations are increasingly in place; it’s now about execution. Buyers play a pivotal role in sparking more action. The ARC Coalition announcement is the latest sign that demand is real and growing, and we look forward to partnering with them to propel the market forward. Symbiosis is also accepting new members. We give companies a simple way to add high-integrity, nature-based carbon removal to their climate action portfolio. Symbiosis offers members the opportunity to learn alongside other buyers, leverage our expertise in project evaluation and deal structures, and have an even greater impact than acting alone. • Last week, our Founder and Executive Director Julia Strong took the stage at Milken Institute Global Conference to speak on a panel about Carbon Markets: Dollars at Work. A few key takeaways from the discussion:   📈 The AI boom has a lesson for carbon markets. The rapid rise of AI shows what's possible when strong demand signals and market confidence align: massive, rapid capital deployment. Buyers coalitions like Symbiosis Coalition exist to provide those critical demand signals for nature, building investor confidence and helping unlock the capital stack needed to scale nature-based carbon removal. 🪴 Nature delivers an outsized return on investment. Buyers aren't just purchasing carbon removal when they support nature-based carbon projects. They're building climate resilience, securing supply chains capable of withstanding future climate shocks, and supporting environmental, economic, and social benefits for local communities. That breadth of impact means even a small percentage of investment in nature can have outsized impact and benefits. 🔄 The perception of risk is changing. Through improved standards, rigorous diligence, and offtake agreements, carbon markets are moving from "risky" to "safe and investable." The shift to carbon as an investible asset class is underway. Examples like Living Carbon's recent Symbiosis offtakes and fundraise are proof points of this in action. The decisions being made today on energy infrastructure and climate investment will shape the next 40 years and beyond. As climate impacts increasingly affect communities and businesses, nature will become an even more critical part of the conversation. • Our Founder and Executive Director Julia Strong joined Shauna Matkovich on the Forest Invest Podcast to talk about what it takes to mobilize capital in nature-based carbon removal: the demand signal, the quality bar, and why offtake agreements are key to giving investors the confidence to back early-stage projects. That is what Symbiosis Coalition was built to catalyze: the financing to scale the next generation of nature-based carbon removal projects. Almost two years in, we're beginning to see this thesis in action. Listen below!

🏗️ 🌲 How Symbiosis is Building Demand for High-Integrity Forest Carbon With a coalition of leading corporate buyers to help unlock finance for nature-based carbon removal. In today's episode, I’m joined by Julia Strong, Founder and Executive Director of Symbiosis Coalition. In this conversation, Julia explains how buyer-led demand can help scale high-integrity forest carbon projects and mobilize capital into nature-based carbon removal. We talk about the role of long-term offtake agreements, the quality criteria Symbiosis uses to evaluate developers, and the common reasons projects fall short in the RFP process. Julia also shares what investors and project developers need to understand about readiness, benefit sharing, and the future of forest carbon as an investable asset class. 🎙️ “Carbon finance is one of the most promising tools that we have in our toolkit to mobilize billions of dollars for nature, climate, and people. It hasn’t yet lived up to its potential, and that was a key reason for starting Symbiosis.” Listen to the episode here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eetquCjs #ForestInvestPodcast #CarbonFinance #ForestCarbon #NatureFinance #ForestFinance #ForestInvestment

  • Living Carbon is developing high-quality reforestation projects at scale, planting native hardwood and pine on former mine lands and degraded agricultural sites across Appalachia. This project delivers meaningful carbon removal alongside: 💧Improved soil and water health 🦋 Enhanced biodiversity 💼 Economic development for local communities This work is essential for reaching our climate goals, and it requires long-term commitment from buyers and investors. 📣 Last month, we announced that Symbiosis Coalition members Google, Meta, and McKinsey & Company contracted more than 131,000 tonnes of carbon removal from Living Carbon over 10 years. And yesterday, Octopus Energy Generation announced they are backing Living Carbon with $500M to reforest degraded land and remove carbon across North America, alongside an almost $13M investment in their carbon business. Buyers are committing. Investors are backing it. This is how the market is supposed to work. 🎉 Congratulations to the Living Carbon team on this milestone! The future is looking bright. To learn more about Symbiosis and the projects we've announced to date, check out the link in comments. For info on how to join the Coalition, reach out to buyers@symbiosiscoalition.org.

Octopus Energy Generation is backing Living Carbon with $500M to reforest degraded land and remove CO₂ across North America. This major project financing comes with an additional $13M investment in our carbon business. Read more about this huge milestone in today’s WSJ (link in the comments). Living Carbon is putting low quality land back to work. Our innovative reforestation turns low quality land into thriving forests faster to remove carbon or produce sustainable forest products. We recently signed major carbon offtake agreements with Symbiosis Coalition members Google, Meta, and McKinsey & Company. This funding allows us to plant 10x more, growing to 250,000 acres across America. The opportunity is huge. There are over 130 million acres of degraded land in the U.S. that can be reforested. With last month being the hottest March on record in the U.S., 9.4°F above the 20th-century average, scaling climate solutions is more urgent than ever. With this investment, our carbon business is now fully funded. Getting our carbon business to self-sustaining growth now means we can expand into new markets and products. I'm incredibly proud of our team, whose hard work and dedication enabled this milestone and drives progress on this ambitous mission. To celebrate, we included a sneak peak of our Spring 2026 planting season, where we planted almost 1M trees, in the video announcement below  👇 Effie Wang Harry Manisty Farid Abdelazim Jake Weyerhaeuser Kevin Kelly Rahul Misra Laurel Mills Timothy P Sydney Garland Andy Norris Jonathan Shears Julia Strong Lisa Coca Viviana Faga Lauren Faber O’Connor Duncan Carlson Clay Dumas Aftab Mathur Ser Han Tan Darren Cheong
