It could be a history-making day...let's get into it via the Wednesday Morning Rundown: 🚀 Artemis II is NASA’s first crewed mission in its return to the Moon - - and a major step toward sustained human exploration beyond Earth. Scheduled to carry four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, the mission will travel around the Moon and back without landing, testing critical systems needed for future deep-space missions. As part of the broader Artemis program, Artemis II builds on the success of Artemis I and paves the way for landing humans on the lunar surface in upcoming missions. See a high-level summary of the mission below in a video courtesy of NASA. 🚀 But back down to Earth, it seems we have reached a bold new chapter for drones. Having interviewed drone industry leaders over the years here on Supply Chain Now, I've been tracking the steady progress that the industry has made. And it's been cool to see a drone airport at my local Walmart. However, as with all technologies, the good and the bad actors have access to it. We are watching, in realtime, how drone technology has been dramatically changing warfare, both in tactics and in economics. And we are seeing advanced drones used in a variety of ways to compromise national security - - as well as deliver contraband to prisoners (to the extent that some state governments have reached out to the U.S. Federal government for help containing the threat). It will be interesting to see how Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) will evolve. 🚀 For the first time in history, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is implementing a temporary 8% fuel surcharge on package deliveries to combat rising transportation costs, starting April 26, 2026, through January 17, 2027. We spoke about this & many other shipping complexities (along with innovative countermeasures) on a livestream yesterday with Lori Boyer and Tevon E. Taylor. Replay link in comments. 🚀 The Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS), aka "robot umpires", has been busy in the new MLB season. ABS uses tracking technology (like Hawk-Eye cameras) to determine whether a pitch is a ball or a strike based on the official strike zone. According to Baseball Savant, through the first weekend of MLB play, there had been 225 challenges of "human umpire" calls - - and 55% had been overturned by tech-driven review. Ah, but it's a decade (or three) late and a dollar short to address the Eric Gregg fiasco that was Game 5 of the 1997 NLCS. 🚀 Per the WSJ: "More U.S. farmers are shifting to planting soybeans this year, a less fertilizer-intense crop than corn, as fertilizer costs surge because of the war in Iran. American farmers intend to plant 84.7 million soybean acres in 2026, up 4% from last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture." 🚀 Big reports this week: U.S. retail sales for March released today (4/1) and U.S jobs report for March released Friday (4/3). It might be ugly. We shall see. #supplychain

  • Let’s start with the good news. Consumers are still spending in 2026. The bad news? Where and when they spend is much harder to anticipate. Demand now moves in bursts around promotions, price changes, and headlines, and shipping is often where the impact shows up first. In this livestream, we’ll break down why the old playbook is starting to crack and what smarter teams are doing differently. You will leave with practical ways to stay in control of costs without overhauling your entire tech stack. Join us to learn: -Why customer demand is harder to predict right now -The common ways shipping costs start creeping up -How AI helps teams make smarter shipping choices -Simple steps you can take to lower shipping costs faster
