Illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all—one story at a time.

About us

Founded in 2003 by Dave Isay, StoryCorps has given people of all backgrounds and beliefs, in thousands of towns and cities in all 50 states, the chance to record interviews about their lives. The organization preserves the recordings in its archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered, and shares select stories with the public through StoryCorps’ podcast, NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital platforms, and best-selling books. These powerful human stories reflect the vast range of American experiences, wisdom and values; engender empathy and connection; and remind us how much more we have in common than what divides us. StoryCorps is especially committed to capturing and amplifying voices least heard in the media. The StoryCorps MobileBooth, an Airstream trailer the organization has transformed into a traveling recording booth, crisscrosses the country year-round in order to gather the stories of people nationwide. With the 2015 TED Prize awarded to Dave Isay, StoryCorps launched a free mobile app that puts the StoryCorps experience entirely in the hands of users and enables anyone, anywhere to record meaningful conversations with another person and upload the audio to the Library of Congress. StoryCorps also records interviews in its permanent StoryBooths located in Chicago and Atlanta. Recording an interview in a StoryCorps booth couldn’t be easier: You invite a loved one, or anyone else you choose, to a StoryCorps recording site. There you’re met by a trained facilitator who explains the interview process, brings you into a quiet recording room and seats you across from your interview partner, each of you in front of a microphone. The facilitator hits “record,” and you share a 40-minute conversation. At the end of the session, you walk away with a copy of the interview, and a digital file goes to the Library of Congress, where it will be preserved for generations to come.

  • We’re honored to share that StoryCorps Studios’ partnership with the Innocence Project received a Telly Awards win in the social impact category! 🎉 “Stories of Freedom: A Community Archive of Freed and Exonerated Voices” highlights the grace, humor, warmth, and resilience of people who were wrongfully convicted—and the loved ones and advocates who stood beside them. Congratulations to everyone who helped bring these stories to life, including our facilitators, producers, editors, and sound engineer, whose care and creativity made this work possible. These conversations are now preserved in the Library of Congress. Listen to more stories, like this conversation between Rosa Jimenez and Mary Flores: https://lnkd.in/e8bP_793

  • 🎙️ StoryCorps is officially on the road for the 2026 Mobile Tour. We kicked off this year’s tour in Atlanta alongside our partners at the Atlanta Beltline, launching a new chapter in our mission to preserve the stories that shape our shared history. This spring and summer, our new state-of-the-art MobileBooth — generously provided by Mercedes-Benz and converted into a mobile recording studio — will travel across the Southeast, bringing meaningful conversations directly to communities from Atlanta to Charleston. Participants will have the opportunity to record StoryCorps interviews and take part in initiatives including Brightness in Black, One Small Step, and Military Voices. Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the launch of the 2026 Mobile Tour. Learn more: bit.ly/4upgO5G #StoryCorps #StoryCorpsMobileTour #OneSmallStep #MilitaryVoices #BrightnessInBlack

More than 700 young Black men from 37 LAUSD middle and high schools gathered at Crenshaw High School for a powerful conversation with author and StoryCorps Board Member Jason Reynolds. Through honesty, vulnerability, and reflection, Jason challenged students to think differently about courage, leadership, and the power of their own voices. Students left not only with signed copies of As Brave as You, but with a deeper sense of being seen, heard, and valued. This incredible experience was made possible by longtime StoryCorps supporter Sandra Kulli, whose generosity transformed a gala auction prize into a meaningful moment of connection and possibility for hundreds of young people. At StoryCorps, we believe in the power of stories to help us see the humanity in one another — and this was a beautiful reminder of that mission in action. • An inspiration to StoryCorps’ mission and a personal influence on our Founder and President Dave Isay, Studs Terkel is a legendary oral historian who was a champion for collecting the stories of everyday Americans and a lover of the human voice. Every May 16, our organization celebrates his birthday as a holiday—Studs Terkel Day. In 2005, we drove our MobileBooth to his home where, at age 93, he asked, “What has happened to the human voice?” Watch here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ekZhhbe9

  • Every day, millions of New Yorkers rely on a transit system powered by more than 70,000 workers. StoryCorps and the New York Transit Museum partnered to preserve some of the voices of Metropolitan Transportation Authority legends. Recording inside the museum’s decommissioned subway station in downtown Brooklyn, they shared what it’s like to steer a train through the city, the camaraderie of crew dynamics, and the moments—blizzards, breakdowns, and close calls—that tested the system and the people responsible for it. Now preserved at the Library of Congress, the stories of Bill Wall, Bill Allcot, Stanley Reid, and others are part of the StoryCorps Archive and available to the public. Listen to their full conversations and read more on the StoryCorps blog ➡️ https://lnkd.in/giBqjhtq
