EN Investing in future skills starts in the classroom. This week, SPH Engineering visited Kalnciems Secondary School in the Jelgava region, donating an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) that will serve as a practical learning tool for students. Direct access to this technology enables students to develop valuable skills in orthophoto generation, 3D reconstruction, and other data acquisition and analysis methods increasingly used across industries. This initiative highlights how collaboration between businesses and educational institutions can strengthen STEM education and better prepare young people for the evolving demands of the job market. SPH Engineering is promoting drone technology among younger generations as part of its social responsibility strategy. #STEM #edtech #dronetechnology #innovation #education #futureofwork #Latvia #SPHEngineering

74% of trees were healthy in 1997. By 2021, only 56%. That's what BC Ministry of Forests researchers found when they returned to 30 one-hectare plots in British Columbia's managed lodgepole pine stands, 24 years after first mapping them. The growth models used for timber supply planning didn't predict this. They only matched reality when the team plugged in updated field data and revised disease mortality scenarios. The tool that made the 2021 reassessment possible at scale: a DJI Mavic 2 Pro running UgCS with terrain following. Approximately 200 images per hectare. 1.0 to 1.5 cm pixel resolution. 0.92 correlation with hand-measured ground plots across all 30 sites. No crew walking 30 hectares of remote forest for months. It was one drone, consistent flight planning, and ground verification where it counts. The peer-reviewed results are published in The Forestry Chronicle (2026). We wrote up the full case study, including how UgCS terrain following and photogrammetry planning fit into the workflow. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/dCyepzhf

Coal mine reclamation surveys require accurate volumetric data, but in practice, the biggest challenges are often operational: ◉ Equipment failures in chemically treated water ◉ Safety risks around steep, lined ponds ◉ High manual workload for survey crews ◉ Delays caused by wind and difficult access At multiple reclamation sites in Eastern Texas, traditional sonar boats were creating downtime, risk, and inconsistent performance. A switch to a UAV-based echo sounder workflow changed the operational model. Key outcomes: ◉ Higher data density → improved volumetric analysis accuracy ◉ Reduced equipment failures → minimal exposure to corrosive water ◉ Improved safety → no need for crews to operate near pond edges ◉ Lower manual workload → operators work from a single position ◉ More reliable scheduling → surveys possible in higher wind conditions The shift was not only about technology - it directly improved data quality, field efficiency, and crew safety. For companies working in mine reclamation, water management, or environmental compliance, this approach provides a more reliable alternative to traditional sonar boat surveys.
