He got paid a week after his daughter was born. His wife waited four months. Same life moment. Completely different leave experiences. There’s no clean line between "work" and "life" when raising young children — and sometimes those worlds collide on a conference stage. Last year, while I was speaking on a panel at SHRM, my 1 year old decided it was time to nurse. Before anyone could stop her, she had crawled on stage to find me. So I held her, continued the conversation, and someone captured this moment. I didn’t expect the photo to travel as widely as it did. But I think it resonated because we still rarely see mothers fully visible in professional spaces — not after neatly compartmentalizing caregiving, but while actively living it. At the time, it just felt like one of those very real motherhood moments: you adapt, you continue, you do what your child needs.
