Smith Engineering. Engineering You Can Trust.
About us
Smith Engineering’s goal is to challenge the status quo. We want your system to operate as designed with optimal performance with optimal economics, and we want to be held accountable to deliver that for you. Our mission is to shift the focus from the single asset and develop optimization, maintenance, and operational strategies for the integration of all the assets. Optimizing the central plant performance provides the opportunity for energy savings and reducing environmental impact, which allows for achieving greater economic value, organizational objectives, and regulatory requirements. We focus on high-performance complex systems for large commercial facilities, universities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, hospitals, data centers, and district energy plants.

🌟 Exciting News: Bill Broadhurst Joins the Smith Engineering Team! 🌟 We are thrilled to announce that Bill Broadhurst has joined Smith Engineering as our VP of Operations. With a remarkable career spanning nearly 30 years in energy management and engineering, Bill brings a wealth of experience and passion that will be a tremendous asset to our clients and our team. Bill comes to us from Princeton University, where he served as the Director of Campus Energy. During his 15-year tenure, he was instrumental in delivering over $50 million in energy conservation projects that not only met stringent ROI requirements but also significantly reduced the campus's CO2 emissions by over 25%. He spearheaded over $10 million in Building Automation Systems (BAS) maintenance upgrades, ensuring the university was protected from product obsolescence and cybersecurity threats, and enhancing advanced trending and analytics. His expertise in using BAS technology to protect university assets and research, along with his critical on-call responsibilities, makes him a perfect fit for our team. Before joining Princeton, he was the Operations Manager for Dome-Tech. Bill earned his BS and MS in Marine Engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Bill has a longstanding relationship with Smith Engineering, having known Travis Smith and the firm for over a decade. Bill gave Travis the title of “Chiller Whisperer” after witnessing Travis’s brilliance and creativity as he explored Princeton’s campus. “I have a deep appreciation for Smith’s commitment to high-quality engineering and energy sustainability,” Bill shared. His decision to join us is a testament to our shared values and goals in improving energy infrastructure and operations across the globe. Bill has also been a Part-Time Senior Instructor at CUNY for almost 15 years, where he has taught Building Operator Certification and Controls Classes to hundreds of students, contributing to New York City’s efforts to reduce energy and carbon footprints. On a personal note, Bill and his wife have been happily married for 26 years. His wife is a dedicated public education teacher in New Jersey, and they have two children, both pursuing successful careers. Outside of work, Bill enjoys spending time with his family, watching baseball and hockey, reading, and indulging in his passion for board games—a hobby he believes is the perfect way to bring people together and enjoy each other's company away from screens. Bill recommends a few games you may not have heard of… Wingspan, Viticulture, and Strat-o-matic Baseball. Please join us in welcoming Bill to the Smith Engineering team! We’re confident that his extensive experience and dedication to energy efficiency will help us continue to deliver innovative energy engineering solutions to our clients. #SmithEngineering #EnergyEfficiency #Sustainability #TheChillerWhisperer
