Yesterday, Skills4Nuclear organised its first webinar, focused on the work conducted within the project’s Work Package 2 (European Forum for Nuclear Workforce & Skills). The webinar specifically explored the outcomes of the workforce assessment analysis carried out as part of the Work Package, and presenters highlighted how this analysis can inform future guidelines on conducting national workforce assessments. About us
The Skills4Nuclear project aims to address workforce and skill shortages in EU nuclear fission and fusion sectors by establishing a long-term collaborative framework that integrates industry, research and training bodies. Its primary goal is to ensure the safe and efficient use of current and future nuclear technologies, including Small Modular Reactors, by fostering industry-driven workforce development and enhancing capacity-building in nuclear safety, waste management, decommissioning, radiation protection and medical applications. A key project outcome is the creation of a European Forum for Nuclear Workforce and Skills, which will monitor workforce needs, identify emerging skills gaps and continuously update training programs. This forum will serve as a central body ensuring Europe maintains skilled nuclear workforce capable of meeting future challenges. Collaboration of industry and educational institutions will ensure that training curricula are aligned with the latest technological advancements and safety standards. The project also includes the development of a Nuclear Skills Strategy, a multi-annual roadmap guiding efforts to attract, retrain, upskill and reskill professionals for the nuclear sector. The strategy will promote a fair shift to nuclear energy, prioritizing diversity, inclusion and gender balance. A pilot action based on this strategy will be implemented in Poland. Another significant outcome is the implementation of reskilling and upskilling programs enabling workers from other industries, such as fossil fuels, to transition into nuclear roles. These programs will prepare the workforce for advanced technologies like SMRs and fusion with a strong focus on safety and innovation. The project will also develop a series of recommendations and tools aimed at attracting more people to the nuclear sector. This will include broad range of tools which will be tested via a small pilot project and then made available to the wider nuclear communities.

🙋S4N presented at Pescara science festival On 10 May 2026, Roberta Cirillo, Nuclear Engineer at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) participated in the Pescara Science Fair (Pescara Scienza), which gathered members of the local community with both scientific and non-scientific backgrounds to promote science, vulgarisation and research. As part of a broader presentation on the JRC’s activities, she detailed the JRC’s involvement in Skills4Nuclear, and gave an overview of the project’s objectives. 🗣️Yesterday, the S4N project was discussed at the #NESTet conference, organised in Brussels by the European Nuclear Society and ENEN Association. The project was presented by nucleareurope’s Jessica Johnson, leader of Work Package 3 (Communications and Attractiveness) and SCK CEN’s Jakob Luyten, leader of Work Package 2 (European Forum for Nuclear Workforce & Skills), as part of a parallel session on capacity building, skills, competences and qualifications. Following an introduction to the project, where they stressed the importance of addressing skills shortages at all levels, Jessica and Jakob detailed the activities of their respective work packages, giving an overview of the results up to now as well as recently published deliverables and future milestones. Yesterday, the Skills4Nuclear (S4N) project published its Stakeholder Engagement Action Plan! The Stakeholder Engagement Action Plan is the third deliverable published as part of Work Package 3, on Communications and Attractiveness. It provides: 🙋 A mapping of the different stakeholder groupings 🤝 An assessment of stakeholder specific needs 📝 A list of activities to be undertaken to foster active engagement. In terms of stakeholder engagement practices, one size does not fit all: different stakeholders have different needs. As the conversation evolves with different stakeholders, their needs may change and new stakeholders not previously considered may be identified. Earlier this month, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) organised a foresight workshop on nuclear workforce and skills.
