Most patients who qualify for clinical trials never hear about them. Not because the trials are not available, but because getting a patient from identification to enrollment is still incredibly difficult in real clinical workflows. Providers are often navigating this process with limited time, fragmented systems, and tools that were not built around how they actually work. Last week, during #NYFintechWeek, SemperVirens VC co-hosted a dinner with Nationwide Ventures bringing together 25 founders, investors, and enterprise channel partners to talk about the future of employee benefits. Between major tech companies shedding tens of thousands of jobs and healthcare costs with no obvious ceiling, the pressure on both sides of this market is hard to ignore. A few themes from the conversation that stood out: • Healthcare costs are rising at 10-14% annually, a major jump from pre-COVID norms. The biggest drivers: GLP-1s, gene therapies, and growing mental health investment. • Companies are exploring self-insured plans earlier than ever (below 100 employees) as they look for ways to manage rising costs without shifting too much burden to employees. • When breaking through to employers, broker relationships are a critical distribution channel given the trust they hold with buyers. One company in the room grew to 84K customers last year through broker relationships alone. TPA partnerships are emerging as the next growth vector. • ICHRA is emerging as a powerful tool for employers looking for more flexibility. • As layoffs reshape the workforce, the companies winning on retention are the ones asking 'what would make our employees feel secure?' Secure employees don't check out. The products that answer that question convincingly are gaining real traction. One question we kept coming back to: Where does durable value actually accrue in benefits: at the product layer, the distribution layer, or the data layer?
