About us

Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) is one of the largest Scouting organizations in the United States of America and one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with more than 2.4 million youth participants and nearly one million adult volunteers. The organization was founded in 1910, and since then, more than 110 million Americans have been participants in programs at some time. Scouting America is part of the international Scout Movement and became a founding member organization of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922. Scouting America's goal is to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, at older age levels, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations. For younger members, the Scout Method is part of the program to instill typical Scouting values such as trustworthiness, good citizenship, and outdoors skills, through a variety of activities such as camping, aquatics, and hiking. In order to further these outdoor activities, Scouting America has four high-adventure bases: Northern Tier (Minnesota, Manitoba, and Ontario), Philmont Scout Ranch (New Mexico), Sea Base (Florida), and Summit Bechtel Reserve (West Virginia). The traditional Scouting divisions are Cub Scouting for children in grades K-5, Scouts BSA for youth ages 11 to 17 and Venturing and Sea Scouting for young men and women ages 14 (or 13 and having completed the 8th grade) to 20.

  • #ScoutingAmerica is proud to partner with Random House Children’s Books on the official trailer launch for “George Goodwin, Dragon Slayer: A Scouting Legend,” a new middle grade adventure that highlights courage, character and determination through the lens of storytelling + #Scouting. The book - which features a foreword by Bear Grylls and brings the West Virginia setting to life - will be released nationwide on May 5, 2026. This collaboration reflects the power of stories to help inspire young people, spark imagination and reinforce the #ScoutLaw + storytelling. Simultaneously, it reminds us of just how incredible The Summit Bechtel Reserve is…and always will be. For more details and to preorder, visit www.ScoutingLegend.com. Web on, web off. Off please. We’ve all walked through a web at some point. Maybe on a spring hike? Here are a few tips to get through it: Well, you already went through it, but... 🕸️ Try to stay in the center of the trail. Webs are more likely to be found near bushes, trees, and other vegetation. Staying in the middle can help reduce the risk of walking into one. 🕸️ Use a stick. Wave a hiking stick or trekking pole in front of you as you walk to catch any webs before you walk into them. Let’s not go all Jedi Knight first day with a new lightsaber, but use it as needed. Also, say you’re sorry. Manners. 🕸️ Wear a hat. Wearing a hat with a brim can help catch webs before they reach your face. If a spider decides to hitch a ride without notice, you have permission to cancel the ride and let them off at a convenient location without your star rating being affected. 🕸️ Walk slowly and carefully. Take your time while walking on the trail to avoid inadvertently wandering into webs, squirrels, bears, hikers, other dimensions…you name it. 🕸️ Avoid walking at dawn or dusk. Spiders are more active during these times, so consider hiking during the middle of the day to reduce the risk of encountering them. So, in essence, sleep in. • An extraordinarily vibrant reminder that Scouting - and its values - can often transcend geographical location, one’s first language and more. Scouting unites us!

Monday Momentum: One Scouting. One Spirit. This weekend in Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood, I came across a Scouting troop finishing a long day’s expedition. They were tired—but smiling—and took a few minutes to chat. Their warmth and pride were unmistakable. What struck me was how familiar it all felt. The camaraderie. The confidence. The sense of belonging. Different place. Same spirit. That’s the power of Scouting—uniting young people across cultures through shared values of character and service. One Scouting. One Spirit. Gracias to the Scouts of Polanco for the reminder to start this week grounded in gratitude and connection. #MondayMomentum #Scouting #Leadership #Gratitude

  • At its core, Pinewood Derby serves as a leadership exercise. Alongside their families, Cub Scouts are challenged to plan, innovate within constraints, manage setbacks and demonstrate good sportsmanship in competition. These are the same skills that today’s leaders rely on in business, community service and public life.   …You see, before he assumed the role of Chief Scout Executive, President and CEO of Scouting America, Roger Krone was a Cub Scout. The lessons and values Roger learned through Pinewood Derby – including working with his dad to create something magical – shaped the leader he is today. Curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, planning and adapting, being a good follower, having integrity – they’re all things Cub Scouts witness, first-hand, through Pinewood Derby.   Roger’s black and white snapshot makes for more than a poignant #ThrowbackThursday post. It reminds us that #Scouting moments – no matter how small they may seem at the time – can have a substantial impact on a young person and the individual they grow into.   So, tell us, how has Scouting left a lasting impact on you?

In February, Scouting America had the honor of attending the Leigh Steinberg Super Bowl Party. Leigh was a #CubScout and he’s represented some incredible athletes throughout his impressive career in sports management. He’s seen firsthand how athletes live, breathe and train…on and off the field. Now, through the Leigh Steinberg Foundation, Leigh seeks to raise awareness about concussions, traumatic brain injuries, preventative care and mental health. This year, #ScoutingAmerica was honored as the Social Impact Partner at Leigh’s Super Bowl Party, which centered around the theme of resilience. You’ll see our interactive display in these photos – it helps individuals visualize and understand the many different ways Scouting equips kids and makes them more resilient. For more details on this event – and Leigh’s foundation – check out the official press release on Scouting Newsroom: https://ow.ly/Owhg50YspHR. We are experts in outdoor adventures and helping prepare youth - for life. Working with people like Leigh - and other solution-oriented, like-minded organizations - help us learn more, adapt, build ourselves up and contribute more value to the youth of America. It’s a privilege. We thank everyone involved in making this event possible and a big success. Throughout the future, we will leverage this LinkedIn Showcase Page (dedicated to Scouting America Partnerships) to share more news around partnerships, sponsors, collaborative efforts and more. • Have a son or daughter in grades 9 through 12? This post is for YOU. President Gerald R. Ford was a Distinguished Eagle Scout who deeply valued integrity and public service. To honor that legacy, his foundation's annual writing challenge asks students - including Scouts - to respond to a thought-provoking prompt in 500-750 words. The top prize includes more than recognition - $2,500 will be awarded. The deadline for youth to submit drafts is quickly approaching (March 13, 2026, 5 PM EDT). Students - and parents - can find details and the prompt on the official website: https://ow.ly/WXsH50Ys7P3. For essay tips for Scouts, see this recent blog post: https://ow.ly/Imb050Ys7P2. • Welcome to HQ, Randall! If you’ve visited our National Service Center for training or something else, what’s one thing you learned?

Still Moving Forward and Learning! I had a great time at my first day of scouting professional Field Service training at the national scouting Service Center in Texas yesterday! We are learning the tips and tricks and methods behind the job of being a professional in scouting. Already after one day it's been really enlightening. It's great to meet so many good, talented people. It really is an amazing room. I remember being in college and going to a professional development conference in Washington DC. #thewashingtoncenter, and thinking "wow, all the people in this room are really impressive and talented and dedicated". That was a very inspiring moment for me. This feels like a mirror of that experience. We really do have some dedicated and talented people working for Scouts. I'm having a lot of fun and I've never been to Texas so that's a treat as well! Kyle Barta Isaac Young Winter P. Lucia Strnad Robert Ball Walker Beard Alan C.
