Sometimes, all it takes is one person with a bold vision to make the impossible possible. That’s what happened when Tim Smit stood at the edge of a barren clay pit and made a choice – to see success instead of failure. In that moment, the Eden Project was truly conceived. Bringing it to life was no small feat, but its existence proves the miracles that can happen when people work together towards a shared dream. There's nothing quite like watching designers react to paper in person, and the AIGA Chicago Paper Show delivered. As Desiree Kerns, our Packaging Sales Manager, put it: "There has been new energy brought back to 'print,' so that was refreshing to see and hear." The room was full of people who care as much about the materials behind their work as the work itself, and that made for some great conversations. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, spent time with our samples, and talked shop with us. We enjoy being part of a community that keeps finding new things to do with paper and print.

Sappi is excited to announce today the signing of binding agreements with UPM to form a proposed independent 50/50 joint venture company in Graphic Paper. The proposed joint venture would bring together Sappi’s European Graphic Paper business with UPM’s Communication Papers business in Europe, the UK and the US combining strong assets, expertise and people to create a more focused and resilient business for the future. The transaction remains subject to regulatory and other approvals, including shareholder approval, with final resolutions expected by the end of 2026. As Sappi CEO Steve Binnie noted, this proposed partnership has the potential to help secure a long-term, profitable future for the European business, while continuing to support customers and protect the European manufacturing base. In recognition of International Day of Biological Diversity last Friday, Sappi would like to highlight how we continue to act locally for global impact; in this case, in North America. We partner frequently with nonprofit organisations like the American Bird Conservancy and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. This includes a project to set up and implement a timber harvest on private land that creates early successional habitat for the Golden-winged Warbler. On setting up the harvest boundaries, the landowner mentioned having seen a potential bear den on the property. Sappi therefore located the bear den (pictured below) and marked off the area to ensure no operations would disturb the bear. For Sappi, preserving biological diversity is not only part of our origin story and how we've evolved, it's part of our daily DNA when we make decisions and interact with our surroundings.

On World Biodiversity Day, Sappi Southern Africa is sharing how our forestry landscapes are managed not only for production, but for ecosystem resilience, species protection and restoration at scale. Around a third of our land is set aside specifically for natural biodiversity management, while our planted landscapes are responsibly managed to support a high diversity of species alongside commercial forestry. From conserving natural habitats and restoring wetlands, to protecting rare species and measuring biodiversity outcomes, these efforts reflect a commitment to working with nature. Swipe through to explore what biodiversity stewardship looks like in practice — and how nature positive action can deliver impact for both people and planet.

Packaging is more than just a functional container for products. It’s a critical touchpoint that influences customer satisfaction and perceptions of a brand’s quality and luxury. Our research with the packaging experts at Clemson University found that premium packaging with attractive colors and a luxurious look and feel can act as a surrogate for the product itself, influencing how consumers perceive and evaluate it. Sappi is honoured to be featured in ABB’s latest industry paper – Resourcing our future. It highlights water management, sustainable forestry, and the potential to create fibre-based renewable alternatives by making full use of the entire tree & its side streams. Tracy Wessels Group Head of Sustainability and Investor Relations at Sappi, discusses how Sappi continues to develop new ways to use side streams from the pulping process, thereby creating renewable alternatives to fossil-based inputs in downstream value chains and transforming traditionally fossil-based value chains. There is also a video showcasing Sappi’s ongoing collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund in South Africa’s uMkhomazi catchment to safeguard long-term water security and protect our shared water resources. Don’t hesitate to let us know your thoughts and insights on the paper. Simone Singh was always awe-struck by bridges, interchanges & complex road networks when she went on roadtrips as a child. This curiosity grew into a desire to make a difference; to leave something behind that would endure. STEM enables her to create structures & systems that last. Forestry South Africa
