There are the fortune 500 enterprise building backends with Restate, and then there are startups using Restate for completely unprecedented types of apps: A pro-active coding agent that doesn't just see your code-base, but instruments the code, gets live metrics and traces from the production deployments, and starts diagnosing issues and proposing solutions pre-emptively. AI Agents is one of the use cases where it is graspable why 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 are a better abstraction than 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀. With Durable Functions, you wrap steps you want to be durable (e.g., inference calls, tool calls) and don't need to refactor the code into workflows and activities. The Agent stays a long running process (except for suspensions and failover), so caches or expensive transient state keeps working naturally. If you still need to move steps to a separate physical process, make the step its own Durable Function that is called from the agent function - voilà. You show this to an app developer, and it will look familiar to them, because it is just service handlers (functions) that call/rpc each other.

Aient is building a production-aware AI DevOps agent that detects problems in production, investigates root causes using runtime telemetry, and automatically opens GitHub PRs with proposed fixes. Instead of building custom infrastructure for resiliency, orchestration, retries, snapshotting, and workflow recovery, the Aient team built their entire agent harness on top of Restate. This powers their agents with: - Durable execution - Resumable tool calls dispatched to remote sandboxes - Per-agent inboxes and serialized turn-taking for predictable agent behavior - Human-in-the-loop workflows across Slack, Linear, and MCP - Durability built into the runtime itself, instead of bolted onto application code - Cheap idle operation because agents can suspend and resume without holding resources open As agents become more autonomous, long-running, and operationally critical, reliability stops being a “nice to have” and becomes part of the product itself.
