  • This year, the Mid-West chapter is honoring Harold Nance with the Humanitarian of the Year Award. Harold is the Executive Director of Jonah Affordable Housing and enjoys spending his time volunteering in his community. He is involved with the American Red Cross, Gideons Ministry, Rotary Club, African American Chamber of Commerce and much more. "I wouldn't know how to live if I didn't help others," Harold says. Harold will be honored at the Mid-West Tennessee Heroes Luncheon on Wednesday, May 7 at Union University. We are excited to celebrate him and all the work he does for his local community. 👏

  • May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the importance of mental wellbeing and self-care. Experiencing a natural disaster or other emergency can be intensely stressful. Even when the immediate danger has passed, the impact can still be felt. People may feel grief or anger over the damage or loss, fear or hopelessness when thinking about rebuilding their lives, or they may simply feel overwhelmed and not know how to begin. Taking those first steps toward recovery can be easier with a little support. That's where Red Cross Disaster Mental Health volunteers step in. • Sisters Christina and Veronica Martin came all the way from California and Nevada to donate blood in Nashville at our blood drive in partnership with Metallica and All Within My Hands Foundation (Metallica). They were inspired by the memory of their dearly departed brother-in-law, Freddie, who was a blood donor and a huge Metallica fan. Christina and Veronica (pictured left, wearing Freddie’s shirt) are not only passionate Metallica fans, but also dedicated blood donors who encourage everyone who’s eligible to give blood. We are incredibly grateful for their donation and encourage others to save lives by becoming a blood donor. To find a drive near you, visit: RedCrossBlood.org

  • Celebrating the Month of the Military Child! Red Cross volunteers joined over 600 carnival goers at the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone in Clarksville, TN, for a day full of games, laughter and community connection. From ring toss to big smiles, our volunteers—like Rashonda, Alex and Zachary—helped bring joy to military children and their families. As the Month of the Military Child comes to an end, we want to thank all who came to the carnival and our volunteers for their time!

  • What began as a routine diagnosis of uterine fibroids turned into a life-changing journey for Aprile Futrell—a mother, Nashville native and founder of Give Glean Grow. Before her health scare, Aprile had never thought much about blood donation. However, now, she says, she thinks about it all the time. “I was that ‘someone else’ you hear about on the news,” Aprile recalled. “And because someone took the time to donate, I’m still here, alive, a mother, a friend and an advocate.” Aprile has developed a passion for spreading awareness of uterine fibroids and advocating for blood donation. We are grateful for her advocacy and willingness to share her story. Read more about her journey: https://rdcrss.org/3YgZIsD
