At the conference organised by Riding Sunbeams and Purpose as part of DCIW , my BIGGEST realisation was India doesn’t lack technology or policy for freight decarbonisation—98% rail electrification and massive corridor investments prove that. The REAL gap is moving from isolated successes to coordinated, system-wide scale. Freight decarbonisation is not just a tech shift—it’s an institutional transformation.Aligning centre and state priorities, financing models, and workforce adaptation will determine the pace of transition. The opportunity is clear: shifting trucks to rail and scaling high-capacity corridors can cut emissions while boosting economic efficiency. The next frontier is execution—aligning policy, finance, and industry to move from ambition to implementation. Last week, Purpose was on the ground at Mumbai Climate Week, in conversation with partners and peers reflecting on some of the most pressing climate challenges of our time - including the future of urban waste systems. As the city grapples with rising volumes of waste, a critical question emerged: How do we scale the solutions that are already working? We explored this at our official spoke event, “Solutions That Work: From the City, For the City,” co-hosted with the Global Methane Hub. The convening brought together government leaders, waste practitioners, civil society organisations, and active citizens to focus not on reinventing, but on strengthening and expanding what exists. On 14th Feb 2026, at the Museum of Solutions, we convened city leaders, practitioners and community voices around one important question How do we scale what’s already working in Mumbai’s waste systems? Mumbai generates 7,000+ metric tonnes of waste every single day alongside thousand tonnes more in construction debris. At this scale, solutions cannot remain pilots. From redesigned wet waste collection systems to community-led segregation models and innovative business and tech interventions, the building blocks are already in place. So what’s stopping scale? Last week at the Youth Townhall for Better Buses in Delhi, hosted by Youth For Climate India, I had the chance to share work from Sustainable Mobility Network. The Youth for Better Buses campaign surveyed 800 students across 40+ colleges, translated those insights into a Youth Charter & engaged with 25+ political candidates across 8 constituencies. In August 2025, the Delhi government announced around 25 new buses for university students, a milestone that reflects what sustained, collective youth engagement can move. For me, the learning from the townhall was twofold. 1. What it truly means to empower youth - This campaign wasn’t about token consultation. It was youth-led research, youth-led advocacy, & youth-led negotiation. It reaffirmed that: young people can shape policy when supported by the right ecosystem, thoughtful guidance, & real access. 2. What reliable public transport means for a city - At the youth townhall we also presented SMN’s research: Beyond Free Rides - A Multi-State Assessment of Women Bus Fare Subsidy Schemes in Urban India. The conversation connected directly to what students were saying: affordability matters, but reliability, frequency, safety & accessibility matter just as much. Delhi is a city of migrants. Thousands of students move here from smaller towns & other states for education & work. For many of them, buses are not optional, they are essential. A reliable bus system determines whether they can attend classes regularly, access internships, participate in city life & move with dignity. This also raises an important policy question: - Schemes must be designed using disaggregated data by gender, income, disability, migration status & geography, so that benefits are equitable & responsive. Affordability policies, including fare subsidies, should be: Gender-responsive, Inclusive of persons with disabilities, sensitive to non-binary & transgender commuters. The townhall reminded me that when youth leadership & evidence-based policy come together, cities can move quite literally in the right direction. Grateful to represent the Purpose at #EvalFest2026, sharing Stories as Evidence: Participatory Art for Inclusive Evaluation in Evolving Contexts. #EvalFest hosted by the Evaluation Community of India a space that brings together evaluators, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to share knowledge, partnerships, and new approaches for impact in complex and evolving contexts. What stayed with me most was the reminder that evaluation is not only about methods and metrics, but about voice, visibility, and shared learning, including creative and participatory ways of understanding change. Evaluation should support learning and responsiveness, not only accountability, so systems remain prepared for the future. It must remain flexible and adapt to changing realities while ensuring ethical and inclusive practices that protect participants, especially women, adolescents, and marginalised groups. Deep gratitude to the organisers, co-speakers, & participants who made this a space of listening, learning, & possibility. If there is one thing that has lasted throughout human history, it must be "storytelling." Telling stories is natural for human beings. A story of success inspires people, while a story of failure provides valuable lessons—what not to do and what needs to change. Yet, we often limit our ability to harness this powerful tool to drive social change. The field of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) is no exception. Traditional MEL tends to focus on counting numbers to measure the extent and breadth of changes but often discounts or undercounts people's narratives about why and how these changes occurred and how they have or have not benefitted them. In recent years, several changes have accelerated; albeit, in many instances, these are still rhetorical, but good practices are abundant. Let me cite a few such changes: An increased attention to the question "whose narratives prevail?" – It's the 'primary stakeholders' for whose benefit the development resources were allocated, and projects or programmes were designed, with the promise of change made. An increased attention to "co-constructing the narratives". It's where the primary stakeholders and principal protagonist or the project implementer get an opportunity to share their experience of 'intended' versus 'achieved' changes but so as other stakeholders whose participation and support were critical to these changes. These two shifts have also profoundly necessitated a change in the "choice of MEL methodologies." The goals of "co-construction" and "giving voice to the primary stakeholders" cannot be achieved through a top-down evaluation research design. It has become imperative to 'co-construct' the evaluation research and learning questions, the methods adopted to answer these questions, and to consider what we will do with the answers—all of which are welcome changes. It was a pleasure to chair the session on "Narratives and Storytelling for Change" at the EvalFest 2026 with the panellists: Swati Batra, Ragni Nathani, Suneha Kandpal, PhD, Radhika Dayal, and Asinsala Madhumali Wijerathne.
