In our study of more than 7,000 mobile VPN apps, we found 64 that follow your physical location by GPS, and these are some of the most downloaded VPNs in the US. 64 of the 390 VPN apps available in the US are owned by Chinese companies, where the law obliges them to hand user data over on request, while 31 hide that ownership behind shell firms in Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK. People downloaded them 1.3 million times in June alone. The tracking runs deeper than most people assume. Trackers in these apps collect device ID, device model, network type and carrier name, and three of the apps we studied are owned by market research companies. One of them, Urban VPN, has been shown to capture user conversations and pass them to AI chat platforms. Apple and Google let all of it through. They require developers to submit an identity and a privacy policy, and they check that the paperwork exists, but they don't audit whether the app behaves the way the paperwork claims. They take roughly 30% of the revenue either way. So we're asking both of them to run real ownership and security checks instead of accepting self-reporting, remove the apps that fail, and publish where a VPN company is actually based and what it does with your data. A VPN routes every byte you send through someone else's servers, and who that someone is matters more than what it costs. Full investigation: https://lnkd.in/efPC9ynx

Does the EU AI Act apply to your business if you don't build AI? Most likely yes. The Act splits companies into providers, deployers, importers and distributors, and if your team uses an AI tool for hiring, support, marketing or analytics, you're a deployer with obligations of your own. It can also reach businesses outside the EU when their systems or outputs are used inside it. Some of those obligations are already live. The transparency rules took effect on 2 August, which is why AI labels started appearing on Instagram and TikTok this month. And the requirement to support AI literacy among staff who use these tools on your behalf has applied since February 2025. The bigger dates are still coming. High-risk rules for things like hiring algorithms and biometrics start December 2027, and August 2028 for AI built into regulated products. The useful first step is unglamorous: work out which AI tools your teams are actually using, and for what. Most companies can't answer that yet. Our full guide to the Act, what's banned, what's high-risk, and what you need in place: https://lnkd.in/exgTBfw5

Honored to support the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Every year through our Lifetime Fundraiser, we back organizations that are making a real difference. On top of this, funds are allocated from each year's Fundraiser in order to support past beneficiaries. Thanks for the kind words. 💜

As you know, I'm a Director of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. But, did you know this is a volunteer gig? The OSMF has a few paid positions, but all Board members who are voted in by the global community are volunteers. I jokingly say that my work with the OSMF is my baby because well, it takes time and love. I don't think I'd be qualified to be in this role if I did not truly 100% believed in the project, its people, its meaning of community. I'm sharing this so that those of you who did not know are also aware that the OSMF is not a profit-making-business. We rely 100% on donations from members all around the world and sponsorships from various institutions who use our data and believe in the project. With that, I do want to share an update on our latest Platinum Corporate Sponsor, Proton ! 🤩 🎉 🎈 You can find out more about our announcement here: https://lnkd.in/eQXR-VFs But, on a personal note, as myself, I want to kindly send a big thank you to Proton's very own Irina M.. Thank you, Irina for believing in us and being such a pleasure to chat and work with. Proton is lucky to have you! Thank you, Proton !
