A pothole is a budget decision from several years ago. The roads we'll drive in 2031 are being chosen right now, in line items most voters never read. Our latest from the NCFOR Journal for Open Roads on the hidden cost of deferred road maintenance, and why the Mountain West is the canary in the coal mine.

Winter Storm Fern has already caused more than $100 billion in damage and disrupted daily life across three dozen states. The lessons it revealed about road safety, supply chains, and preparedness should not be ignored. We just published an article on what this storm exposed and what can be done to reduce the human and economic toll of future storms. We can’t wait for the next storm to act. What should change before then? Read the full article below.

While many are heading home for the holidays, our team is heading out to the roads. ❄️🏠 The holiday season is a time for family and rest, but for many at CDOT, it’s one of the busiest times of the year. While the rest of the state is celebrating, our crews are often missing holiday dinners and staying up through the night to plow passes, manage traffic, and keep our highways safe. To the men and women working away from their families so that we can reach ours: Thank you. Your dedication is the ultimate gift to the people of Colorado. We see you, we appreciate you, and we thank you for your service this season. 🏔️❤️ #TeamCDOT #CDOT #HolidayHeroes #Colorado #PublicService #Gratitude

As many Coloradans gather with family and friends this holiday season, thousands of CDOT professionals will be right where they always are, out on the roads, behind the scenes, and on call 24/7, keeping our highways moving and our communities safe. From plowing snow and responding to crashes, to monitoring weather, managing traffic, restoring power to signals, and supporting emergency responders, our crews work through holidays so others can get home safely. Their dedication doesn’t pause for celebrations, and we are deeply grateful for their service. As you travel this season, we ask for one simple thing in return: help keep them safe. 🚗 Drive sober 📵 Put the phone down 🛑 Slow down and move over for roadside workers ❄️ Give yourself extra time when conditions change Safe choices save lives; yours, your loved ones’, and the people working along our highways every day. From all of us at CDOT, we wish you a safe, peaceful holiday season and thank you for doing your part to look out for one another on Colorado’s roads. #DriveSafeColorado #HolidayTravel #MoveOver #ZeroDeaths #PublicService #ThankYouCrews

This morning’s devastating 50+ vehicle pile-up near Terre Haute, Indiana serves as a reminder of just how quickly winter driving conditions can turn deadly. Black ice, reduced visibility, and split-second decisions can claim lives and result in injuries in a matter of moments. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the first responders working in brutal conditions. Winter storms don’t forgive small mistakes. One patch of black ice, one second of distraction, or one vehicle following too closely can trigger a chain reaction no one can stop. Let’s use this tragedy as a wake-up call to drive like lives depend on it—because they do. 7 Practical Steps for Safer Winter Driving: 1. Slow Down – Speed limits are for dry pavement. In snow and ice, reduce speed dramatically (often 30-50% below posted limits on highways). 2. Increase Following Distance – Use the 8-10 second rule instead of the normal 3-second rule. It gives you time to react when the vehicle ahead suddenly slides. 3. Assume Black Ice is Everywhere – Bridges, overpasses, shaded areas, and areas near water freeze first—even if the road looks just “wet.” 4. Brake and Accelerate Gently – Sudden inputs are the enemy. Smooth, progressive braking and gentle throttle prevent skids. 5. Know How Your Vehicle Brakes – Practice ABS and non-ABS braking in an empty lot so you’re not surprised when it kicks in during an emergency. 6. Keep Your Fuel Tank at Least Half Full – Prevents fuel line freeze-up and gives you reserve if you’re stuck or detoured for hours. 7. Carry a Real Winter Emergency Kit – Blankets, food, water, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, traction aids (kitty litter/sand), and a charged phone power bank can literally save your life. 8. Stay safe out there, slow down, keep extra space, and arrive alive. If you have team members or loved ones driving in winter weather today or this week, please share this with them. #WinterDriving #RoadSafety #BlackIce #DriveSafe

Utah is once again raising the bar for winter road maintenance innovation. At this year’s Utah Transportation Conference, some of the most forward-thinking leaders in roadway operations came together to showcase how technology, modern equipment, and coordinated strategies are transforming winter maintenance into a proactive and predictive system. Watch our NCFOR recap video for a look at the breakthroughs highlighted at the event—from cutting-edge snow-fighting tools to data-driven storm response systems now being used by UDOT and partner agencies.
