At Monarx, we believe security should not feel like a fear based upsell. In a recent podcast, Luke Langford explains why the old SiteLock style model often feels off to customers. Paying extra just to feel safe does not build trust. The better approach is simple. Start with strong security included, then offer clear upgrades on top. Stronger prevention, ThreatShield, cleanup when it is actually needed. This is how you move from one time panic purchases to real adoption and recurring revenue. This is why security is one of the hardest things to upsell in hosting 👉 Customer: if I need to pay extra for security, does that mean my hosting is not secure in the first place? That is exactly what I discussed with Luke Langford, CEO of Monarx, in my latest podcast episode. Luke argues that the old SiteLock-style model often feels wrong from the customer side, because it can come across as fear-based rather than useful. Monarx tries to solve this differently by including strong security in the base package first, then building clear upgrade paths on top. The logic is simple. Give customers solid protection by default, then offer extra layers that feel real and easy to understand: stronger prevention, Threat Shield, and even cleanup services with manual help when needed. Instead of trying to push everything into the cart on day one, Luke recommends creating multiple touch points over time and turning higher tiers into recurring revenue, not one-off panic purchases. And it seems to work. The more automated hosts often see 5-20% uptake, while more premium and hands-on providers can go much higher, with one example reaching an 80% attach rate.
