Updates

  • Camp Monarch 2026 is officially a wrap. As a fully remote team, when we finally get together in person once a year, it’s kind of a big deal. This year, our team landed in Montreal for 3 days of closing our laptops and being present with each other. Time to reflect on how far we’ve come, celebrate the milestones we hit together, and get fired up about what’s ahead. We competed hard during field day, spent time with our teams, and found countless moments in between the activities to connect. We’re back at it feeling refreshed, reconnected, and energized. P.S. Before you ask, yes, we did eat poutine.

Most financial forecasting tools make you answer a bunch of questions before you can even see your own data. When are you retiring? How much will you spend in retirement? What's your investment return assumption? The problem is most people don't know. That's why they're looking for a tool in the first place. We built Forecasting at Monarch differently. Instead of front-loading assumptions, we let you start with what Monarch already knows about you, and then play. Drag your retirement date. Add a career break. Model what happens if you buy a house in three years. Watch the chart update in real time as you move things around. That was the bet we made from the start: play unlocks trust and intuition. If you can see how one life decision ripples into another, you stop feeling anxious about the future and start feeling curious about it. Seeing the feedback come in has been the best part. One person shared: "It's hard to know how to accurately forecast. This helps me feel like I'm on the right track and I like that I can play around with it." Another said "I think it goes a long way to making this complicated feature simple to use and really intuitive!" That's what we were building toward. Something that makes a complicated, sometimes scary topic feel real and approachable, and puts you in control without requiring you to have all the answers first. Forecasting is live for Monarch Plus members. If you've ever wondered where you're actually headed, go find out. You can also watch a walkthrough here: https://lnkd.in/dKmcKpiZ It was super fun to build a product I personally really needed. I'm so grateful to Wells Riley, Elliott Dicus, and Jordan Yatckoske, who turned a vague idea into something people are actually using to feel more in control of their financial future. This is just the start. We've already shipped dozens of improvements since V1 launched a few weeks ago, and we have a lot more in the making.

The hard part about your financial life isn't knowing what you want. It's knowing whether the decisions you're making today are actually getting you there. A lot of our members have told us their financial lives have gotten more complex. From managing multiple income streams to asking bigger questions about retirement, and wondering how today's decisions impact longer-term goals. We built Monarch Plus to answer these questions. Available now, Monarch Plus includes Forecasting to model your future, Monarch for Business Owners to keep your business and personal finances in one place, Advanced Investment Analysis to go deeper on your portfolio, and a free will through Trust & Will to protect what you've built. For the first time, the future you're building toward isn't just a feeling. It's something you can see, adjust, and move toward with confidence. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/efHH9frn

Last week, we talked about why Monarch runs a Hackathon twice a year. Here's what that actually looks like. Every December, Spotify Wrapped takes over the internet. Our Head of Core Product Engineering, Alisha Sojar had one question ahead of our Fall 2025 Hackathon. What if we did that for your spending? It wasn't a planning session or on a roadmap. Just a thought ahead of a Hackathon that took flight and became "Guess Your Spend": A game that shows you how well you actually know your own spending, category by category, then lets your compare with other Monarch members. Spoiler alert: it was a little bit humbling. One week. One question. One person who brought an idea to their teammates and hit the ground running to build it. That's what our Hackathon makes possible, and why we do it twice a year. The Spring Hackathon 2026 is wrapping up today. We still don't know what's going to come out of it, and that's the part we'd never trade.

You might have noticed we won a few major accolades recently. One of those was Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies. Our Spring Hackathon starting next week is a great way to mark the award-winning ways in which we work. Twice a year, we spend one week where the only question we’re answering is: what have you been wanting to build? Some of our most-loved product features started as Hackathon projects. The point is much bigger than a feature though. What matters is what happens when a fully remote team gets a week to collaborate and follow an idea through together. It's about the teammates who don't often overlap having the chance to build something side by side. The mistakes that turn into something better than the original idea. We started with this being a once a year ritual. Then twice, because we didn't want to stop. We saw the way a week like this transforms into something special. Spring Hackathon 2026 kicks off next week. If you're someone who has wondered what it looks like to work somewhere that makes room for this kind of thing, stay tuned.

Most financial software is hard to use because the incentives are wrong. A few years ago I wrote that revenue model is the dominant term for any product: over time, a company morphs to reflect its incentives. Culture and mission are great guardrails, but incentive models win. Monarch became our attempt to build on the right side of that. A product built by a group of talented, thoughtful people, working under aligned incentives, and now used by over a million people to manage their finances. Subscription-only, no ads, no data selling. User experience first. Being nominated for two Webby Awards this year (Best UX and Best Fintech) feels like evidence that the bet is paying off, and I'd appreciate your vote for Monarch. Links in the comments.

Cue the confetti: We are a 2x 2026 Webby nominee! Nominated by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, we’re up for two honors at The Webby Awards: Best User Experience and Best App in Fintech, Financial Services, and Banking. We've spent years building something the financial industry rarely prioritizes: a product that actually helps people change their relationship with their money. Being recognized for both the experience and the category is the kind of confidence boost we could only dream of. Voting is open through April 16 and takes two minutes. We'd love your support! 🏆 Best UX → https://lnkd.in/gYqcqTdu 🏆 Fintech → https://lnkd.in/dkejAGsq
