John David Booth teaches 8th grade history in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He completed our Virtual Mentorship Program two years ago. This year, he was named Tuscaloosa County Educator of the Year and is one of 16 finalists for Alabama Teacher of the Year, selected from more than 155 applicants statewide. John David is committed to the students of Tuscaloosa County: he grew up there, and he came back to teach. This is what it looks like when a great teacher gets the recognition they deserve. Congratulations, John David, and thank you to Tuscaloosa County Schools for investing in educators like him.

What a week it has been at Building 21 ! We are grateful to have the amazing work of our students, staff, and community uplifted by the organizations that have supported this work. We recently received the inaugural “SEL In Action” Award from The School District of Philadelphia for our student-led Community Council program where students coach their peers to resolve conflict through restorative practices. Thank you Lauren Keith Thomas and @Kendra Jenkins for seeing the value in what we do and choosing us for this honor. Next, we are thrilled to receive the honor of receiving Elevate 215 ‘s “Innovation Award” at last night’s annual gala. As an Elevate 215 “Beating the Odds” High School Grantee, we were recognized for the transformational work of our Algebra 1 department in reshaping how students learn math. Thanks to Modern Classrooms Project, we now see students lead their own learning in a personalized and self-paced setting. Students initiate learning new skills, collaborate authentically with peers, and have an individualized path to success based on their needs. As the school year comes to a close, I can’t help big think about how important the investments in these programs have been for improving outcomes for young people. We can’t wait to see what’s next! #phillyed #innovate #FutureIsBright

"Teacher Appreciation Week brings lots of praise and promotional discounts, but what would it mean for teachers to be truly valued in their profession?" Khallid Love, Mathematics Teacher at Washington Leadership Academy in Washington, D.C., tackled this question in this Next Generation Learning Challenges article five years ago. A lot has changed since then. Too much has stayed the same. How are you valuing educators and communicating value now, especially in the age of AI? https://lnkd.in/gdw_RAX2

We just posted another big role at Modern Classrooms Project. We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help build our first in-house edtech products. Modern Classrooms has grown into a movement of educators reimagining what it looks like to teach rigorous content in a deeply differentiated way in their classrooms. Every day, teachers in our network are doing transformational work for students, and we want to build the tools that make that work easier. Here’s a snippet from my latest collab with Modern Classrooms Project explaining their unique teaching methodology across classrooms. It’s always a fun challenge to figure out how to convey a technical concept in a visually engaging way. I took inspiration from old school 8 bit video games for this explainer to show a birds eye view of all that goes on in a classroom and how a teacher can maximize their time. Writing is one of the most complex cognitive tasks we ask of young children. When the mechanics are so heavy, especially for many learners with disabilities, the ideation—the actual "learning" part—is the first thing to be sacrificed. See how this teacher uses an AI tool to bridge the mechanics so their ideas cross over. Modern Classrooms Project MagicSchool AI LEAP Innovations https://lnkd.in/etFiMv-N
