MEET MSC's NEWEST CIVMAR Guess who’s joining Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) Engineering Department? He’ll be the right-hand man to the Second Engineer. Cincinnati, Ohio, native Joseph Zubelik is one of the newest Third Assistant Engineers (3/AE) to join MSC's elite team of engineers. He comes to us with great credentials, including a B.S. in Marine Engineering Technology from Maine Maritime Academy (Class of May ’25) and approximately 84 sea days aboard the USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), where he learned how to work with diverse crews and adapt to the unpredictable nature of the sea, he said. When asked why he chose a career with MSC, Joseph stated that he wants to continue his family heritage of supporting the U.S. Navy. While he won't wear a Navy uniform like his predecessors, Joseph views his engineering role as vital to the warfighter’s success. "Engineers ensure MSC ships readiness, which directly support the warfighter at sea, by serving as a year-round logistical lifeline that keeps combatant ships operational," he said. Joseph added that while he’s looking forward to seeing the world, he’s even more excited to begin working “hammer and tongs” in his new role as a 3/AE. We are very excited to have him join our team! We know he will be an excellent addition to an already strong engineering force. Welcome Aboard, Joseph! #MSCDelivers #WeAreMSC #UnitedWeSail

MEET MSC’s NEWEST CIVMAR It is a pleasure to introduce Patrick Joseph Maguire III, a 2015 California Maritime Academy graduate with 10 years of experience in the maritime industry! ⚓ From 2015 to 2023, Patrick served as a Third Officer aboard multiple MSC Combat Logistics Force (CLF) vessels, including the USNS Guadalupe, USNS Wally Schirra, and USNS Kanawha. Since then, he has sailed on several heavy lift vessels with American Maritime Officers (AMO). Returning to us with both specialized military and commercial experience, Patrick is a high-value asset who will enhance the overall capability of MSC’s civil service mariners (CIVMARs). Patrick is excited to rejoin his MSC Family, returning as a First Officer to mentor junior crew members and provide guidance on safety and operational procedures. "I want my new team to know that while I expect hard work, they can expect that I will reward their efforts," he shared. Recognizing the challenges CIVMARS face when deployed on past ships, Patrick set up gaming groups onboard MSC ships to help boost ship morale by bringing crew members together to relieve stress. Fun Boss Patrick hopes to continue this tradition on future vessels because gaming groups have proven to foster a sense of community, which is a core benefit in a maritime environment. Thanks, Patrick, for taking the initiative to keep our team connected. Welcome home! 🌊 #MSCDelivers #WeAreMSC #UnitedWeSail

Congratulations to this week’s “Ship in the Spotlight,” USNS Guam (HST 1) for supporting Korea Marine Exercise Program (KMEP) 26.1. KMEP, first conducted in 2011, is an annual month-long exercise consisting of tactical-level field training events. This training involves U.S. Marine forces operating with Republic of Korea (ROK) Marines in a diverse set of scenarios to enhance interoperability and further strengthen the alliance. KMEP 26.1 features III Marine Expeditionary Force units conducting field training exercises alongside their ROK Marine Corps counterparts, consisting of close air support evolutions, live-fire ranges, and logistics training. Demonstrating the effectiveness of U.S. and ROK forces, across a wide range of scenarios, underscores combined resolve and upholds regional security and deterrence. #WeAreMSC #WeDeliver #UnitedWeSail

MEET MSC's NEWEST CIVMAR We are pleased to welcome Third Officer – Navigator Brycen Young, who joins us with a B.S. in Maritime Transportation and a Third Mate’s license from the California Maritime Academy, Class of 2025. Confident and prepared for his new role with the Military Sealift Command (MSC), 22-year-old Brycen said he’s ready to apply his training to the critical, high-stakes responsibilities of a navigator, noting that "one mistake could cause an incident to the vessel or even worse, the loss of a shipmate." The number one thing Brycen would like for his new shipmates to know about him is that he is very altruistic. "I plan to be an excellent shipmate because I am always willing to freely give my time and energy to those in need. Helping others is never a burden when it is the right thing to do." Looking over the horizon for the next five years, Brycen sees himself moving up in the ranks to Second Officer, noting, "I plan on putting in the work and taking advantage of the expertise of experienced Second and First Officers who are ahead of me today." Welcome aboard, Brycen! We’re thrilled to have you here and can’t wait to see the incredible things you’ll accomplish with your new shipmates. #MSCDelivers #WeAreMSC #UnitedWeSail

MEET MSC’s NEWEST CIVMAR The dream team is back together! We are absolutely thrilled to welcome First Assistant Engineer Craig A. Moran back to the fold. His energy, talent, and infectious smile have been sorely missed. For those who don’t know Craig, he is a 'Boomerang' employee returning to us with a wealth of experience. He brings his expertise as a Strategic Sealift Officer and Navy reservist, providing strong leadership, discipline, and problem-solving skills. With 27 years in the maritime industry – including 15 years with Military Sealift Command – Craig is already familiar with our culture, systems, and processes, allowing him to hit the ground running on day one. During his 12 years in the commercial industry, he sharpened his technical knowledge of complex machinery and advanced troubleshooting, which he will now apply to MSC ships. Bringing Craig back was a clear choice; he is an immediate cultural fit and a seasoned engineer who navigates the organization with ease. His return offers significant value, particularly in his ability to mentor and retain the next generation of talent. This time around, Craig aims to support leadership in fostering collaborative and communicative relationships with the civil service mariners—the true lifeblood of MSC, he said. Craig, we are thrilled to have you back; our team is stronger with you on board. #MSCDelivers #WeAreMSC #UnitedWeSail

A proud day for the Navy and the oceanographic community! ⚓ Today, the U.S. Navy christened USNS Robert Ballard (T-AGS 67) during a ceremony at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The ship honors Robert Ballard, a retired U.S. Navy commander, professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, and National Geographic Explorer at Large.
