We had the chance to sit down with NYC Council Member Chris Banks for a conversation that felt both grounded and urgent. Chris talks about growing up in East New York and how that lived experience fuels his work today — from pushing for affordable housing to challenging shelter oversaturation to making sure communities are actually heard in the decisions that shape their lives. He also speaks honestly about mentorship and what it means to break cycles of generational poverty. In this week’s episode of "The Bells I Hear" podcast, we sat down with Dr. Christine Mangino to remind us how much college can change someone’s life. She talked about being a first‑gen student, finding her way, and now leading Queensborough Community College with so much care for the students who walk through its doors. We got into the real stuff — money stress, food insecurity, mental health, and what it takes to make sure students don’t fall through the cracks. QCC is doing the kind of work that actually meets people where they are. Hon. Diana Reyna story starts long before her years in public service. In this week’s episode of The Bells I Hear, she shares a moving piece of her family history — her mother leaving the Dominican Republic in 1965, traveling alone, working as an au pair, and building a new life in New York with the help of friends and community. Those early experiences shaped Diana’s understanding of housing insecurity and community care, long before she went on to serve as a New York City Council Member and Deputy Brooklyn Borough President. Her reflections show how personal history can guide a lifetime of advocacy.
