  • May is #StrokeAwarenessMonth – a time to raise awareness about stroke prevention, recognition, and the importance of timely treatment. Because early detection and rapid action are key to saving lives, the MaineHealth Stroke Program team visited our Portland Food Pantry to offer a free blood pressure clinic to community members.

  • We’re proud to bring more advanced breast cancer care closer to home for patients in Maine. Recently, Ekaterini Tsiapali, MD, performed the first reported S-LYMPHA procedure in the state. This procedure is done during breast cancer surgery and helps lower the risk of lymphedema, a type of swelling that can happen after lymph nodes are removed. It works by creating a new pathway for fluid to drain, helping protect the arm from long-term complications. In the past, many patients had to travel out of state to receive this kind of care. This milestone reflects MaineHealth’ s commitment to making high-quality, advanced treatment available right here in Maine.

Care Team Member Spotlight! Emily, Wound Ostomy Registered Nurse We recently heard from Emily, a Wound Ostomy RN who has been working at MaineHealth in this role for just over a year. “My interest in wound care developed in nursing school and has grown throughout my nursing career”, said Emily. “When the job opening was posted on the MaineHealth Careers website, I felt like it would be an excellent opportunity to use my 6 years’ experience in dermatology to pursue a specialty in nursing I have always been drawn to.” Emily added, “I very much enjoy the autonomy nurses have in this position, and the team approach this department promotes. Providers listen and value input from the nursing staff. I also enjoy the opportunity in this role to really get to know my patients. I love the willingness from everyone to help and support one another. I am grateful to be surrounded by a team with so much experience and knowledge. It's a great feeling to be in a position where you learn something new every day.” Emily – we’re so happy to hear that you’re thriving in this specialty and we’re so lucky to have you on our nursing care team here at MaineHealth!
