⚠️ Correction on the MageDispatch #42 tip about testing for PHP execution in upload directories. I recommended uploading a test.php file to check if your server executes uploaded PHP. That advice is incomplete. A reader got hit hard last Monday: they had checked their servers using test.php and found no issues. By Monday morning, several of their shops had been compromised. The culprit? Their hoster blocked PHP execution for all filenames in that directory, except for index.php. So the correct way to test this: ✅ Upload both a test.php AND an index.php file ✅ Check if either one returns output instead of raw PHP code ✅ If index.php executes but test.php doesn't, you're still vulnerable Some hosters have quirky configurations where index.php is treated differently. Do not assume a negative result with test.php means you're safe.
