LBC is the science-focused residential college at MSU. We study science in its human, social and global contexts.
About us
Lyman Briggs College was founded in 1967 to bridge the cultures of the sciences and the humanities and social sciences. We offer an innovative and integrated curriculum, crossing disciplinary boundaries and exploring in their social, human, and global contexts. Michigan State University has been the top public institution for learning communities for 4 consecutive years, to which Lyman Briggs College is a large factor. Lyman Briggs students, or “Briggsies”, live their first year in Holmes Hall, building a core foundation in LBC’s innovative biology, chemistry, physics, and math courses before taking upper-level STEM courses within other MSU colleges. The average class size in Lyman Briggs is 25 students, much smaller than regular university courses. Students have 37 majors to choose from in biological, social, physical, environmental, and computational sciences, as well as mathematics and teaching. There are about 2,000 current Briggsies, with 65% of them self-identifying as women. We foster curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving through evidence-based and inclusive teaching. Students have ample opportunities to participate in high-impact learning experiences such as being an undergraduate learning assistant, engaging with course-based and independent research, and Lyman Briggs education abroad and away programs. Lyman Briggs values undergraduate research and promotes experiences through faculty mentoring, competitive research grants, and inquiry-based classroom labs. Students have many opportunities to work on faculty research projects. 67% of research-active faculty have current grants from National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Our 2032 Strategic Plan lays a path to achieve our vision: to transform what it means to be a scientist through teaching and research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a culture of support, inclusion, and mutual respect. #LBCMSU
