The Supreme Court of Canada has elaborated on exceptions to the presumptive Jordan time limits on net trial delay, ruling that “particularly complex” criminal prosecutions or scheduling conflicts in joint trials may, in some circumstances, justify trials taking longer than the presumptive limits set out in R. v. Jordan, 2016 SCC 27. https://lnkd.in/exQZYxJK

The Supreme Court of Canada has created 6-3 a new common law tort of “intimate partner violence” (IPV), which may be claimed separately or within family law proceedings. The far-reaching five-judge majority judgment, written by Justice Nicholas Kasirer (along with a separate lone concurrence by Justice Andromache Karakatsanis), not only recognizes a new tort, it elaborates on when novel torts should be created and on the roles of courts and legislatures in developing the law: Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, 2026 SCC 16. https://lnkd.in/euvcWwNj

There is a story that quietly circulates through the legal profession. It goes something like this: to build a truly successful law firm, you must sacrifice everything else. Your weekends. Your health. Your presence at the dinner table. Your hobbies, friendships and any meaningful sense of personal fulfilment outside of work. Success, the story insists, demands total surrender. https://lnkd.in/eYRHA_Tf

Anyone unfamiliar with the acronym “UFC” in Toronto’s family law world should be aware of the need for a Unified Family Court, not an Ultimate Fighting Championship. Although given the current state of access to justice, one could be forgiven for confusing the two. https://lnkd.in/gq5YUG5A

In yet another high-conflict case, Eccles v. Eccles, 2025 ABCA 418, the Alberta Court of Appeal considered an appeal of a case management judge’s order, where the appellant mother sought to have the case management judge recuse himself on account of an alleged reasonable apprehension of bias. https://lnkd.in/gd_7Sz8v

In the complex world of business, the dichotomy between growth and personal freedom often fails to achieve both. Lawyers frequently find themselves at a crossroads, torn between the relentless pursuit of success and the elusive quest for personal well-being. However, a transformative concept is emerging that challenges this binary thinking: the AND mindset. This article explores the psychology behind the AND mindset and how it can enable law firm growth while simultaneously fostering personal freedom. https://lnkd.in/gWMMhrWU

Many Ontarians rely on a personal injury lawyer for legal advice during recovery after an injury, when they need it most. However, the change to Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) means these conversations may increase in number and need to take place as soon as possible. That’s because changes to these benefits could be significant for full-time workers who may be in an accident off the job. https://lnkd.in/gnk_FcKx

In the recent decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal in Malamas v. Wey, 2026 ONCA 133, Chief Justice Michael Tulloch addresses how intimate partner violence impacts the application of the Limitations Act, 2002 and the doctrines of res judicata and abuse of process in the context of motions for summary judgment. https://lnkd.in/gWYcZtUD

In a sweeping policy shift poised to dramatically increase the cost of separation and divorce for thousands of Toronto families, the Family Branch of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice has announced that, effective April 2, 2026, all family law motions at the Toronto courthouse will presumptively proceed in person — and no longer by Zoom. https://lnkd.in/gkeBpFEp
