Before incorporating #ArtificialIntelligence into co-designing curriculum, instruction or classroom routines, educators agreed that four core personalized learning practices should already be in place: https://bit.ly/4qTMTQg 1. Designing for variability: recognizing that students come with different experiences, strengths and needs and that personalized learning begins by honoring where each learner starts and designing appropriate learning pathways for success 2. Establishing classrooms that support agency and independence: creating and modeling clear procedures and co-created expectations so that learners know how to navigate tasks and engage in independent problem-solving as active participants in their learning 3. Cultivating student ownership: reflecting on practice and adjusting instruction to create space for students to make decisions about their learning; this requires flexibility and a willingness to release control in support of student ownership 4. Designing with purpose: clarifying learning goals and criteria with learners, using those targets to guide instructional decisions and thoughtfully considering differentiation and agency when designing learning experiences

Disruption in education isn’t a temporary phase—it’s the new operating condition. From extreme weather and cyberattacks to community polarization and educator burnout, everyday disruptions are reshaping what schools face and what learners need. Yet too often, our responses still rely on surface-level reforms designed for a more stable world. In this piece, I explore why traditional school reform is no longer enough—and what it looks like to build education systems that are nimble by design. The future depends on deeper, sustained transformation grounded in shared vision, educator leadership, and community ownership. As state legislatures get into full swing, now is not the time to wait for the federal department of education to offer clear guidance. The ground is shifting rapidly, and our learners need the best ideas from innovative educators to take root and spread now. In our piece for The 74 Media, Stephen Bowen and I directly address how more states can take action to support bottom-up innovation, along with examples where states are already leaning in - and where they're not. https://lnkd.in/etVbQGKf What recommendations did we miss? Last month, we came together with young people, educators and policymakers to chart Nevada’s path toward a more connected, learner-centered future. As the facilitator of the Nevada Future of Learning Network in partnership with the Nevada Department of Education, we were joined by friends from KnowledgeWorks and National Center on Education and the Economy to host a two-day convening centered on statewide collaboration to co-design a future that is possible. We shared bright spots from across our state through learner-driven panels, brought voices together in action-oriented round tables, and showcased future possibilities at an interactive “2036 graduation party.” Together, we can realize future-ready learning where innovation is powered through alignment across educational systems and community co-design helps every learner become a thriving leader in our state. Visit nvfutureoflearning.org to learn more about this important network and how you can join us in building a connected, learner-centered education ecosystem across Nevada. #CFL #NetworkConvening #NevadaFutureofLearningNetwork #ReimaginingLearning
