One of the biggest misconceptions in software engineering is that quality begins at the development stage. It doesn’t. Quality begins with understanding people, their context, behaviour, friction, and the real problem hidden beneath the request. Last week, I had the pleasure of teaching a class at the Interswitch Group Developer Academy. Sharing knowledge is something I genuinely enjoy. It’s always rewarding to see ideas spark in others and to help demystify complex concepts. And I hope they found the session engaging and valuable as much as I did! In this session, we explored Design Thinking for Engineers not simply as a creative exercise, but as a strategic discipline for building products that are useful, usable, and desirable. In fast-moving engineering environments, teams often rush to build and ship features because we are obsessed with features. But high-performing engineering teams know that technical excellence or team velocity is not enough if the software or any solution, for that matter, misses the mark. Design Thinking introduces a more intentional approach, encouraging deep user empathy before a single line of code is written. We need to frame problems clearly before jumping to solutions, experiment with prototypes to minimise waste before making heavy investments, and validate that we are truly solving real problems before scaling. So, when next we are faced with a problem, before we go off to start building, let’s step back, engage the intended users, turn assumptions into evidence, and experiment a little before we do any heavy lifting. Great engineering is not just about building functional systems. It is about building systems that solve the right problems in the right way. As technology continues to evolve, engineers who combine technical capability with human-centred thinking will create the products, platforms, and experiences that truly endure. #DesignThinking #SoftwareEngineering #ProductDevelopment #EngineeringLeadership #Innovation #UserExperience #DigitalTransformation #Technology
