Permission debt accumulates quietly. A database role granted during a project stays in place after the project ends. A service account gets sysadmin during a migration because scoping it correctly would have taken another day. A troubleshooting login created during an outage never gets removed. Three years later, nobody remembers any of it. Audit-ready usually comes down to three things: - a documented security baseline - a current-state snapshot - a record of what changed over time Without all three, you can demonstrate a point-in-time permissions state. One stored procedure. One hour inside SSMS. A full live walkthrough of execution plans, key lookups, index strategy, optimizer behavior, and all the ways SQL Server can make choices that seem reasonable right up until they absolutely are not. The biggest takeaway: Index seek and key lookup are basically handcuffed together. And if you want to reduce the blast radius of parameter sniffing, sometimes the index alone is not enough. You have to break the query into phases yourself. Watching Brent test index strategies live, rebuild plans, compare date range behaviors, and show exactly where ChatGPT got the optimizer logic wrong made this one especially good.
