Our CEO Matthew Mottola joined the Free Cities Foundation podcast while at Running Remote in Austin last month. He touched on how workforces are being redesigned for the agentic with host Timothy Allen. Enjoy!
40% layoffs at large companies. Not next year. This year. According to someone who runs a platform that sees the inquiry data before the layoffs hit the news. Matthew Mottola is the CEO of Human Cloud, an aggregator of flexible-talent platforms. The layer between Fiverr at the low end and Deloitte at the high end, his clients are Fortune 500 companies hiring specialists for projects in the $500K-$5M range. He sees marketing-related inquiries up 140% on his platform, at the same time the layoffs are starting to land in his clients' marketing departments. When our host Timothy Allen asked how he can be sure, he gave a concrete mechanism. Five roles: front-end, back-end, PM, designer, and a fifth, are now compressed into one position LinkedIn calls a "builder." Jack Dorsey's Block went from teams of 14 to teams of 6. That's where the 40% comes from. You need less to do more. Then he recounted how Claude now runs 98% of his company's media operation. Articles, highlight videos, social scheduling, guest emails: all automated. They even use a "/human" command that researches what an AI would do every two weeks, so Claude can do the opposite. Timothy told him he thinks AI is sloppy and the curated stuff wins. Matthew didn't budge. Full episode in the comments. Hard conversation, no easy answers.
