📡 450 MHz: Why is it becoming increasingly important for mission-critical communications? What happens when conventional mobile networks cannot provide the coverage that critical operations require? For utilities, public safety and critical infrastructure operators, connectivity is not just about speed. It’s about coverage, reliability and resilience. This is where 450 MHz makes a difference. 🔹 EXTENDED COVERAGE Lower frequencies can travel further, enabling operators to cover larger geographical areas with fewer base stations. 🔹 BETTER SIGNAL PENETRATION Improved propagation inside buildings, industrial facilities and challenging environments, including certain underground locations. 🔹 DEDICATED NETWORKS Private and dedicated cellular networks give critical infrastructure operators greater control over their communications. 🔹 NETWORK RESILIENCE An additional connectivity layer that can complement conventional 4G and 5G networks. ⚙️ HOW DOES 450 MHz WORK? The principle is simple: cellular communications operating at lower frequencies than those typically used by smartphones. The ecosystem includes several standardized LTE bands: 📶 Band 31: 452.5–457.5 MHz (UL) / 462.5–467.5 MHz (DL) 📶 Band 72: 451–456 MHz (UL) / 461–466 MHz (DL) 📶 Bands 87 & 88: Additional spectrum in the 410–430 MHz range, extending the low-frequency cellular ecosystem. And the technology continues to evolve, with ongoing developments toward 5G NR connectivity for future mission-critical applications. 📱 WHAT ABOUT SMARTPHONES? Most conventional smartphones do not natively support these frequencies. But what if we could extend their connectivity capabilities without designing an entirely new device? At HMD Secure, we are actively working on this approach through our HMD Fusion 2.0 and 3.1 interfaces. Using our pogo-pin connectivity architecture, dedicated Tactical Modules could attach directly to the back of a secure smartphone, integrating specialized modems and antennas for additional network capabilities. Off-network communications are a key step in the evolution of mission-critical communications, keeping teams connected even when network infrastructure is unavailable. Through our ongoing work on 3GPP-based MCX Direct Mode (5G NR Sidelink) alongside Qualcomm and HMD Secure, we’re helping turn this technology into operational capabilities. From the first live demonstrations at Critical Communications World 2025 to the new advancements showcased at CCW 2026, our work reflects steady progress toward interoperable, standards-based off-network communications. At TCCA Critical Communications World, we had the opportunity to showcase how Lyfo can strengthen connectivity across the HMD Secure portfolio. Lyfo continuously monitors available mobile networks and can automatically select the best available connection, helping devices stay connected when network conditions change or coverage becomes challenging.
