At Great Hearts Academies, the journey from Assistant Teacher to Lead Teacher is marked by formation, mentorship, and a deepening love for the craft of teaching.   Tyler Ash, now a Fifth Grade Lead Teacher at Archway Scottsdale - A Great Hearts Academy, was drawn to education by “a desire to work with people in a way that is both real and intellectually demanding.” The Apprentice Teacher program offered a clear path forward: an opportunity to step into the life of a classroom while learning alongside experienced educators.   Through close observation, weekly coaching, and collaborative planning, Mr. Ash developed both the art and discipline of teaching. These elements, he notes, were instrumental in accelerating his growth—not only in classroom management, but in the careful delivery of lessons that engage and challenge students.   Mentorship played a defining role in his teacher apprenticeship experience. Mr. Ash reflects on the distinct influence of those who shaped his practice: Ms. Madison Torres, who modeled the power of care and trust; Ms. Maddi Smith, who demonstrated how a teacher’s character forms the tone of a classroom; and Mr. Trey Welch, who exemplified the importance of preparation, structure, and disciplined execution.   By the time he stepped into a Lead Teacher role, Mr. Ash had already been formed by a community committed to excellence. During spring break, our Campus Security Officers (CSOs) took advantage of an empty school to participate in critical training they conduct several times each year.
