We're working with NVIDIA AI to shape the future of fusion energy by collaborating on a digital twin of the DIII-D National Fusion Facility, which is operated by GA on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This highly advanced digital replica is directly synced with DIII-D, the largest operating fusion research facility in the United States. What makes it unique is that it is tied to a live, operating tokamak. As DIII-D runs experiments, the digital twin uses live sensor data, AI and advanced engineering models to stay closely matched to the real machine. This gives researchers a powerful new way to better understand experiments, test ideas and improve future fusion power plant designs earlier in development. By helping scientists and engineers learn faster and make smarter design choices, the DIII-D Digital Twin aims to shorten the design stage, save valuable time and help reduce the significant costs of building future fusion energy systems. Overall, this capability is helping speed the path toward commercial fusion energy. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gAUbHWH3 #GeneralAtomics #FusionEnergy #NVIDIA #NationalInventorsMonth

Congratulations to the DIII-D Digital Twin team for earning Best Demo honors at Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) ConFab 2026! The team demonstrated the novel capabilities of the only digital twin tied to an operational tokamak in the United States, working in conjunction with live experiments at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility. Mark Kostuk, Sterling Smith and David P. Schissel showcased how AI, high-performance computing and real-time experimental data can rapidly test plasma scenarios and help identify stronger operating conditions. This powerful new tool will help researchers and operators support fusion experiments more efficiently, accelerating the path toward commercialization while saving valuable time and resources. A job well done for the entire team on this outstanding achievement.

Great discussions this week with ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) focused on advancing silicon carbide (SiC) composite technologies for fusion energy systems and broader nuclear applications. The visit created an opportunity to exchange ideas around the materials innovation needed to support next-generation energy technologies, including tours of General Atomics’ Magnet Technologies Center (MTC) and Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) SiC/SiC composite fabrication Laboratory. There, our teams showcased ongoing work exploring how SiC/SiC materials perform under the extreme heat and radiation conditions expected in fusion and advanced reactor environments. As fusion and advanced nuclear technologies continue to progress, developing engineering standards and design codes for these materials will be critical to enabling their safe and reliable deployment in future energy systems. #fusionenergy #generalatomics #asme
