Innovation Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust
What can be more important than childrens health? Over 2 days with Alder Hey Innovation I cried. I laughed. I learned a lot. But more than anything, I left fully energised and excited about the future. My highlights: 🦇 Day 1: A full day in the "bat cave" #innovation space beneath the #hospital, with Iain Hennessey and team where I saw: - Life-saving surgical planning powered by 3D modelling - A mock neonatal room used to design better surgical layouts - Shelves lined with inventions, products, awards and honest failures - One of the most inspiring teams of clinical innovators, programme leaders and consultants I've ever encountered 🎂 Day 2: An A-list innovation conference celebrating 10 years of Alder Hey innovation: - Keynotes from Steve Rotherham, Fiona Ashcroft, Tony Young, John Chester, Jo Williams, and Dr. Matthew Bromwich - The most heartwarming patient panel, led by David Cole, MBA, where parents shared what the innovation team's work has meant for their families - A start-up showcase featuring Lyrebird Health, MediSites360, Blinx Technology and Sum Vivas Ltd, all delivering real, tangible impact - A rousing speech and children's showcase headed by Dame Rachel de Souza and featuring some brilliantly creative young minds from local schools - Spending time with Bethany Foo - And a bunch of very cool stuff I'm sure I missed My key takeaways: 💡 Innovation can make a profound difference to the lives of patients and families. It's hard work but the rewards are priceless. 💡 Anyone innovating in a hospital setting would gain enormous value from connecting with the Alder Hey team. There is so much to learn from them. 💡 Health innovation is a team sport. I met so many brilliant people, including H.J. Jardine, Rushdy Ahmad, PhD, Jouni Lounasmaa, Alexandra Norrish, Edd Crawley, Carl Timms +++ ❤️ If I were starting my career today, I'd want to work somewhere like Alder Hey. At the heart of everything they do, they've built a culture and environment where innovation genuinely flourishes.
