Our COO Mohammed Abbas recently shared his thoughts on the new food pyramid and what it means for the produce industry. Get his perspective on how the industry will shift now that produce is the foundation of the plate.
A food pyramid only works if people can actually reach its foundation. With the directive to "make half the plate produce," fruits and vegetables have officially become the foundation of mainstream diets. For the produce industry, this is an incredible opportunity, but it also means the systems beneath it must be strong enough to carry the weight. #FoodSecurity #Sustainability #PublicHealth #FreshDelMonte #FreshProduce #Nutrition

We’re pleased to share two exciting updates from our Kenya operations. First, we’ve opened an Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) facility within our existing pineapple canning infrastructure, as part of our strategy to better utilize our raw materials. The IQF plant is a key part of this diversification strategy — it will allow us venture into processing other fruits and vegetables. For example, the IQF plant includes a mango processing line capable of handling both company-grown fruit and produce sourced from smallholder outgrowers, opening a new route to market for Kenyan farmers. And secondly, we have commissioned an 807kW solar power plant as part of our commitment to sustainable and reliable energy solutions. The mains electricity supply can be limited and unpredictable, so this solar plant will enable us to harness Kenya’s abundant sunshine to power our operations efficiently while lowering the company’s carbon footprint.

We’re pleased to provide an update on the acquisition of Del Monte Foods assets. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court has approved Fresh Del Monte as the purchaser of the global Del Monte® brand (subject to existing regional licensing arrangements) and select Del Monte Foods assets, a decisive legal milestone that allows the sale to advance into the pre-closing phase. With this key procedural step achieved, we are one step closer to finalizing the purchase. We are now focused on executing the remaining steps, including customary regulatory reviews and satisfying remaining closing conditions, as we move toward closing in a disciplined manner. We’re proud to share that our President Mohammed Abbas has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) through 2028. CCA plays a critical role in advancing U.S.–Africa trade and investment at a moment of growing momentum across the continent. We’ve operated in Kenya for 60 years and are proud to support the country and its local communities. Over the next three years, MA, through this board appointment, will be able to directly engage with senior business and government leaders, access deep market intelligence, and have a seat at the table shaping policies that strengthen commercial ties between the United States and African nations. We’re honored to contribute our experience and perspective as CCA continues to expand partnerships and unlock new opportunities across African markets.

Danny Dumas, our SVP of Sales, Marketing and Product Management, spoke with The Packer about the newly released Dietary Guidelines that now place a strong emphasis on fruits and vegetables. By placing fruits and vegetables at the foundation of the plate, the updated guidelines raise the bar for the produce sector, shifting the focus from nutrition alone to execution, access, and the systems required to deliver fresh food reliably at scale. In the article, Danny shares how Fresh Del Monte sees the new food pyramid influencing the fresh produce department at retail, future produce department trends, and how produce companies can use the new guidelines to drive increased consumption.
