Colorectal cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in the United States, and it has become a leading cause of cancer-related death in young adults. Colonoscopies to identify precancerous polyps are a key tool in preventing colorectal cancer. Research shows that for each 1% increase in a physician’s adenoma detection rate (ADR), the risk of a patient developing colorectal cancer drops by approximately 3%. UC Davis Health implemented an AI tool into their electronic health record to automatically analyze colonoscopy reports and identify the number of precancerous polyps detected. Physicians can review their ADR compared to national and department averages and determine opportunities for improvement with their peers, helping improve clinical outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gx77N7Zt

Patients are already asking Emmie about their test results in MyChart. Now, they can see patient-friendly AI summaries as soon as they’re available — right where they already see their results. Emory Healthcare is the first live with summaries for imaging results. Congrats, folks!

Quiet features save lives. At WVU Medicine, a concerning patient message was received at 9:11am and immediately categorized by Epic AI as "Urgent." Within 12 minutes, the care team responded — connecting with the patient and directing them to the Emergency Department. The patient was actively experiencing a stroke, and the rapid identification and response enabled timely emergency care. Throughout their shifts, care teams can receive an overwhelming number of patient messages with varying levels of urgency. Now, Epic AI can scan messages to determine their urgency and category before flagging the proper prioritization and categorization for the care team.

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death worldwide. According to a recent Preeclampsia Foundation report, 60% of women had risk factors for developing the hypertensive disorder, but only 8% could identify all major symptoms. Awareness of the symptoms enables mothers to be proactive about getting help, both during pregnancy and postpartum. Education is key. Mothers can keep themselves and their babies safer when they are given the proper tools to manage their health. Epic is working with the Preeclampsia Foundation to help women identify symptoms and understand what to do if they occur—giving expectant mothers access to preeclampsia education resources right from their MyChart. https://lnkd.in/eRqAjDY6

Since 2010, one in four rural hospitals across the US has closed its obstetric unit, increasing the average travel distance to the nearest hospital to 29 miles. Madison Regional Health System knew that women in labor from across a wide region with records across multiple systems might find themselves in their care. With longer drive times associated with a higher likelihood of a premature delivery, there's less room for error because every second once the pregnant mother enters the facility needs to count. But would their unit be ready for these mothers? As their Chief Executive Officer Teresa Mallet put it, "We've decided the answer will always be yes." Madison Regional began using Epic's electronic health record and MyChart patient portal one year ago to signal their commitment to the next generation of families in their community. Now, they no longer need to compile the information from different hospitals, and the care team immediately has the mother's health history side-by-side with the baby's chart, providing a complete picture and allowing them to give their patient their full attention. And once the baby is born, their health record provides continuity of care wherever they go, whether they move across the country or find their way back to where it all started: Madison Regional. Across healthcare organizations, Epic AI is taking on more of the documentation work, giving nurses more time to be present with their patients. One example: drafting end-of-shift notes using shift data already available in the patient’s chart. At WakeMed in North Carolina, nurses are using the feature with an unexpected benefit for patients’ families. With Art's help, they're now able to write end-of-shift notes for every shift — and the notes are shared with patients, which means families can read them too. One nurse shared feedback from a patient’s family member: "I am my grandmother’s proxy but live in another state. I can sleep easy when I read the nurse’s note and see that she had a good day.”
