𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫? Nervous. Slurring. Forgetting what year it is. That’s how I used to feel walking into interviews.   Or truthfully, that’s how a lot of candidates I meet *still* feel. One candidate recently asked me:   "𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝟑𝟎 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐝?" Short answer: we don’t.  Long answer: We use spreadsheets, scribbled notes, and group chats with comments like, “Nice guy. Wore a tie. Might be too nice.” But here’s the real truth:   We’re not looking for perfection We’re looking for:  - A willingness to learn   - A story that shows you tried   - An answer that actually answers the question   - And someone we wouldn’t dread sitting next to for 8 hours a day Some of the best advice I’ve seenand now pass on:  - Don’t worry if your experience is unconventional. Show how it taught you something useful.   - Don’t recite a script. Connect, don’t perform.   - And for the love of hiring please answer the actual question. If you're nervous in interviews, join the club.   We're all just winging it some of us with a notepad.
