Hiring experts is important. Listening to them is where the real value shows up. We see this often in nonprofit communications. An organization brings in a strategist, writer, or designer to strengthen a fundraising appeal or campaign, but once the work begins, too many voices get added to the process. The message gets softened. The design gets overworked. The strongest ideas get revised until they feel safe, polished, and forgettable. Internal insight matters. Collaboration matters. However, donor-facing communications need more than broad input. They need strategic leadership. When you hire experts, you are investing in perspective, process, and experience. Trusting that expertise is often what turns a good project into an effective one. If the final piece feels a little too careful or a little too ho-hum, the issue may not be the creative. This article says what so many of us in marketing and communications have experienced firsthand: too much collaboration can weaken a fundraising appeal instead of strengthening it.
