About us

The U.S. Department of State is focused on accomplishing America's mission of diplomacy at home and around the world. The U.S. Department of State manages America’s relationships with foreign governments, international organizations, and the people of other countries. U.S. diplomats and Civil Service professionals carry out the President’s foreign policy and help build a more free, prosperous, and secure world. U.S. Department of State employees, with their skills, character and commitment to public service, are the backbone of America's diplomacy. They represent the people and advocate the interests of the U.S. to the rest of the world. The Foreign Service (FS) is dedicated to representing America and responding to the needs of American citizens in other countries. Members of the Foreign Service can be sent to any embassy, consulate, or other diplomatic mission anywhere in the world, at any time, to serve the diplomatic needs of the United States. Civil Service (CS) employees provide in-depth expertise and continuity in accomplishing all aspects of the Department's mission and are involved in virtually every function of the Department. Civil Service employees issue passports, compile and analyze overseas reports, provide logistical support to posts, consult with Congress about foreign policy initiatives and policies, and formulate and manage the budget. Nearly 7,400 Civil Service (CS) employees serve as a stable resource pool in Washington D.C., at Passport Agencies and field offices throughout the United States, and at several Consulates in Mexico. More than 31,000 Foreign Service National (FSN) employees also supplement the personnel requirements of the Department overseas. FSN employees are local residents of the countries in which we maintain diplomatic posts and consulates. They are valued members of our embassy teams, for they provide continuity for the transient American staff and have language and cultural expertise.

It's not every day you get to protect U.S. athletes at the Winter Olympics in Milan, and it's a unique bonus when you're invited to try your hand at their sport. DSS special agents are assigned to every team and venue at #MilanCortina2026 to ensure the safety of U.S. athletes. Our agents with Team USA Biathlon received an unexpected opportunity: a private shooting session courtesy of the International Biathlon Union Secretary General. One agent who held his own on the range noted that shooting the .22 caliber biathlon rifle alone without skiing wasn’t difficult, but he has immense respect for Olympic biathletes who transition from intense physical exertion to calm, accurate marksmanship in seconds. Protecting Team USA comes with some memorable moments, and reinforces the diverse skill sets our special agents bring to their mission every day.

  • Today, Secretary Rubio hosted the Critical Minerals Ministerial at the Department of State, bringing together partners from across the globe to discuss the future of critical minerals supply chain resilience. Under the strong leadership of President Trump, the United States convened likeminded governments to discuss financing opportunities, collaborative policy solutions, and sign new frameworks that will secure reliable critical minerals supply for the future. This Ministerial marks a significant step forward in building resilient, high-standard supply chains and making America stronger, safer, and more prosperous. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the United States’s commitment to working with allies and partners to ensure that critical minerals supply chains remain strong, diverse, and protected from non-market disruptions. “For too long, the United States has relied on non-market actors for components essential to our economic prosperity and national security. Now, the Administration is taking decisive steps to identify and develop domestic reserves for critical minerals projects that will benefit the American people and ensure abundant supplies for the future.” — Secretary Rubio

  • Under the first year of President Donald Trump’s leadership, the State Department has implemented a bold America First foreign policy focused on making America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. - President Trump has delivered a strong response to the mass migration crisis. Encounters on the southern border have plummeted 99% since January, and the United States signed seven Safe Third Country agreements to expedite deportations. - We’re disrupting criminal networks and bringing fugitives from foreign terrorist organizations and cartels to justice under President Trump and Secretary Rubio. Specialized units supported by the State Department arrested Sinaloa Cartel, MS-13, and Tren de Aragua leaders. - President Trump has ushered in a new era of peace through strength. Because of his commitment to the cause of peace around the world, America is respected again on the world stage. - This year, special agents with Diplomatic Security Service supported the DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force and the Memphis Safe Task Force to make over a thousand arrests, seize hundreds of illegal firearms, and recover more than two dozen stolen vehicles. America is safer under President Trump. - President Trump is keeping narco-terrorists OUT. We’ve created new visa restriction policies for drug traffickers’ families and associates. - President Trump is leading the global effort to disrupt drug traffickers and keep dangerous drugs out of our hemisphere. U.S. counter-drug efforts have produced real results, including seizing nearly 350 tons of methamphetamine precursors in Mexico, eradicating over 80,000 acres of illicit coca in Peru, and seizing over 1,500 pounds of cocaine in El Salvador. - President Trump is the ONLY president to secure a NATO-wide commitment from Allies to spend 5% of their GDP on defense by 2035. This commitment adds an extra trillion dollars each year in deterrence and defense investment. When America leads, Allies step up. - In 2025, President Trump slashed waste and reorganized the Department to ensure our government serves the American people efficiently and effectively. Through strong international partnerships, justice knows no borders.  Diplomatic Security Service special agents supported the extradition of Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo, a Peruvian citizen accused of homicide in Los Angeles County, who was unlawfully present in the United States at the time of the offense. He has been returned to the U.S. to face justice. This extradition was made possible through close coordination with the Policía Nacional del Perú, INTERPOL, United States Marshals Service, U.S. Department of Justice, Ministerio Publico - Fiscalia de la Nacion, and Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores del Perú. DSS’s unique global authorities and law enforcement partnerships ensure that individuals who commit violent crimes against our communities are pursued relentlessly and brought to justice.

  • America's G20 United States leadership is here, and we will invite friends, neighbors, and partners, including new strategic partner Poland. Under President Trump’s leadership, we'll strengthen global partnerships and create new opportunities for American businesses. South Africa’s woke G20 is officially over. "The United States is forging ahead with a new G20. South Africa operated with spite, division, and radical agendas that failed to produce economic growth. America's G20 will propel us forward with innovation, entrepreneurship and perseverance that makes America great and provides a roadmap of prosperity to the world." - Secretary Rubio

  • The previous administration's extreme DEI agenda imposed ideological litmus tests on government workers and robbed nearly 300 Foreign Service Officers of promotion opportunities. Now the State Department is rewarding merit and providing restitution to those unjustly impacted. An internal study conducted by the State Department revealed that 295 Foreign Service Officers were denied promotion opportunities in 2024 after the diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda was embedded into the promotion process. Officers were disadvantaged in promotion considerations if they didn’t fully embrace the discriminatory DEI agenda. The policy prioritized adherence to an extreme ideology over merit and competency. Now the State Department is rewarding excellence. Those harmed by these extreme DEI policies will be treated fairly based on past performance.
